I just adopted an adorable CAG who was ignored for 5 years and has some medical issues to deal with, and picking, not to mention being cage bound, and he's very much stubborn about what he eats.

He seems to be settling in nicely, but getting him to eat has been a challenge.

any suggestions about how to get his meds into him? Just looking for a variety of ideas

After losing my CAG a month ago, I felt rescuing a poor bird who needs a loving home was the only option for me.

no.. they are all liquids. I've tried putting it on Vetrenarian Avi-cakes and he turns his beak up at them, and I tried applesauce, since he loves apples, and he eats a bit of the apples, but ignores the rest. He likes the multi colored pellets, but I'm told they promote picking and have been discouraged from feeding him those... but it's all I can get him to eat. You see my dilemma

Try anything you think of to get the meds into him. And feed him whatever he'll eat. Worry about changing his diet once you two have formed a relationship and he'll trust you. Changing homes is stressful enough without going hungry.

Thanks. Yes, I want him to eat, so I'm giving him whatever he will take.

Try scrambled egg with shells just mash it all up, microwave it for 30 sec, stir, micro another 15 secs or so and give him a small piece to see if he likes it. If he does, add the meds to 2 or 3 pieces of it, thats about all my cag will eat at once. He also looooves his cantaloupe, you can try injecting the meds into a piece of apple.

Hide the drops inside a little piece of Hawaiian bread roll!!

Just an update Sydney started taking his meds and is almost finished with them. He's doing great, and doesn't seem to be cage bound any more, since he is coming out on a regular basis. :grey:

That's awesome! I adopted a cage bound bird a little over a year ago. Today, he'd let me hold him, kiss him everywhere and hug him all day, if I'd let him. He's won my heart, for sure and apparently I've won his too! :)

Awww nice story lisamarie!

How did you end up giving him the medication??? I have been medicating both birds since I got them 1.5 months ago. What a journey haha!
