Does anyone know if pet birds are allowed on Navy Bases in the housing? I can't find answers anywhere.. I know rabbits and other "farm animals" aren't allowed and there a few banned dog breeds. I don't consider rabbits farm animals but I guess they do. Anyway I can't find a thing about birds..

No we won't know what base yet and won't for about five months but even after we move to where ever it is we could still be moved at a minimum of every three years after that..

I don't see how it is fair at all for it to vary base to base considering a lot of people have to continuously move from base to base.. that is how it is with the dog breeds though. There must be a list somewhere of pets that are always allowed.. surely, hopefully.

I don't want to live in constant fear that the next time we are stationed at a new place I might have to give up my birds.

I grew up on Army bases , my parents always had amazons and macaws. I don't know if things have change over the years but to be sure there's some way to find out.

Your best bet is to look up a navy installation, get the phone number of the base housing office and call them.....Unless an installation has a prohibition against accompanied pets, they will be able to give you information about virtually any station.....if you happen to get an accompanied tour overseas, you may not be able to take your birds.....all expense of transport, both forth and back will be your expense, unless your sponsor is officer status and then it is dependent on the installation regulations and controlled by the base veterinarian.....

If you plan to live in base housing, you would probably be well advised to hire a cleaning service whenever you change station/transfer bases.....military housing offices are pretty particular about cleaning and if you have never experienced a move-out inspection, spend the $$$ to have the quarters done right.....your husband or whoever will be your military sponsor can have their orders delayed by a housing office that doesn't like your cleaning job.....

Good luck.....

I sympathise, F&D, being ex-Navy although I lived in quarters on-shore as a single bloke. Since then I've moved around Oz as a public servant (civil service, federal) averaging 2 yrs 10 months in locations all over Oz, over 33 years. There are no rules in staff housing regarding pets, but they're quite strict on how clean the house is when you leave, as it's to accommodate your replacement as soon as you move out (indeed, they are usually in town staying in a motel, waiting for you to leave). With 19 birds (plus, now, 5 chicks) the mess is extraordinary!

Thanks for the info- I dread having to go overseas and give them up. Can a dog be taken overseas at least?

I can only speak for Oz, F&D (don't know what branch your partner is in but US military is building up here as SE Asian bases wind down) and you definitely can't bring birds here. Dogs would have to go through quarantine, it's been cut back from 6 months to 6 weeks I believe but still expensive, since you have a lot of fees plus the board.

Was a BRAT the whole time I was growing up. Dad loved to say, "If the military wanted you to have a pet, they would issue them." Because of this we never lived on base. He would always find us somewhere off base to live.
