I bought a travel cage for Buddy and got him in it today. My husband says he can stay in it for an entire four day trip. I say no. He says I'm too sensitive, I say the animals like me more than him for good reason. Here are pics and I would like input. He can stand up and stretch his wings no problem bu the perch is a dowel and all he can do is sit. A toy is going to take up space. For transporting its great but as a temp home on a trip I don't know.

The travel cage is the white one. He was easily baited with popcorn. Deminsions 12"x18"x22".

Now this is his old cage and I was thinking of taking it so we could put him in it when we get to our destination. Ignore the bulldog. This pic is 20 mins after Buddy arrived in our home and Canelo realized something was in that cage. Deminsions 24"x24"x36".

So in short my thought is to transport him in the small white cage and take the larger one to house him while we are at our destination. Thanks!

It looks like a really nice travel cage, Can he sit on top of the cage for "out of cage time"? (Maybe make a "T" stand on top?)
Can he sit on your shoulder for "out of cage time"?

Joe

I would say if it's possible take both cages like you were saying- use the white one to transport, and his old cage as his home away from home. I think it would be more comfortable for him. And then as Joe suggested, make sure he continues to get plenty of out-of-cage time. [emoji106]

Oh- and I hate to be a party pooper but hanging toys in travel cages could become projectiles in an accident, so maybe soft toys? or stationary ones?

Thanks for the feedback. Both cages are going. I did take Buddy outside in his travel cage and he loved being outside so I'll take him out more.

As for toys, no toys in the travel cage. I could see him getting knocked out or hurt.

This is late, but maybe you should have gotten one larger so you did not have to take two. This a great cage for short vacations. I have one of these as well for my amazon. I am not sure if my measurements are the same as yours. I put in different perches and toys that are not bulky. My friend has one also because it is versatile.

Thanks Tosca, and no you are not too late either. You are right about taking two cages. We took the old cage and it didn't fair the travel well. His old cage is thin and flimsy. I had to fix it twice and even Husband said we need another cage so I'm starting to look around. We bought him a new cage when we got him, we call it the mansion because it's big and has a nice play top but it's BIG. I like the travel cage, he likes it because he's with us, does great in the car, but it's good for short trips. Got any recommendations for a cage we can do travel and housing in one for short trips? Husband says I'll have cages like I have purses, lol.

I am of no help here, but I just saw the picture with the bulldog looking at the bird & cage and it set me off laughing hysterically. That is a great pic :) Thanks for that;)

I think you could still use hanging toys for the travel cage (which is fine for short periods, maybe just take him out once at the destination - as long as it is secure of course). Just use light weight, soft hanging things like those balsa kabobs (looks like organic Styrofoam) then tie the bottom end of it to the grate or cage bars to keep it from swinging. It's what I did for Boomer's travel cage

Ps. I'd also replace the dowel perch with a natural branch perch, preferably something with lots of knots and soft texture so it's easy for the bird to grab on to. I use something like this: http://www.petco.com/assets/product_images/7/761997005125C.jpg

He's hard to ignore right??? Lol, I have three dogs and when I brought Buddy home I didn't know what to expect. The pugs knew immediately Buddy was in the house, Canelo the bulldog took 20 mins to register that there was a creature in that funny box. He's very smart but very laid back, when I "talk" for him, I mimic Tommy Chong's voice from Cheech and Chong and That 70s Show. When I found him on the arm of the couch like that, I couldn't stop laughing. We have lots of nicknames for him, one is Baby Huey because other dogs don't like him, not kidding and it's just him entering a room.

He could care less about Buddy (so far), but visits Buddy daily to see what crumbs he's dropped. He's also a plotter, always planning how to get food, like targeting the smallest kid and head butting them so they drop their food, going airborne and taking a kid's chicken leg, pushing a TV tray over to get food. Here are two pics, his daily visit to Buddy, Lola beside him and the second, figuring out how to get that French fry gracefully. There is no graceful about him, lol. Enjoy!
