Whenever I sample the fruit or nuts in Higgins or Goldenfeast seed mixes, the is a lingering bitter chemical taste in my mouth. It makes my tongue numb for quite a while.

The packages say they are preservative-free.
Any ideas why everything in the bag tastes so bitter?

Dried fruits taste a lot stronger than fresh fruits which may explain the strong bitter taste. Dried fruits packaged for humans almost always have added sweetners that hide bitterness but parrot fruits should be plain.
Or you may have an allergy to whatever tidbit you sampled. Does you mouth feel funny, tingly, and itch at all?
I hope they aren't lying about ingredients. How would anyone know?

I tried some pine nuts after my parrots stopped training with them to see what was wrong… nuts that have gone bad taste bitter, and smell rancid. It was a nasty taste, and I finally understood why my parrots were protesting their training treats. They were intelligent enough to deny them.

Yeah pine nuts can go rancid because of the high oils in them. I try to buy the best quality ones I can find, because we also use them as Salty's main training treat. Every once in awhile he will reject a given nut.

He has never accepted dried fruits of any kind, but he loves fresh. In fact he rejects Nutraberry flavors if they contain dried fruits or he will pick out the bits of dried fruit from the Nutraberry and toss those. Maybe Donna is correct that natural dried fruits have a bitter taste to them. I'm not in the habit of trying pet foods, so I can't say for sure.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Well, I revisited the ingredient lists. Apparently, when initially researching these products, I had convinced myself there were no "additives", just organic fruit, nuts and seeds. Wrong. At least for Higgins, the package does say "no artificial flavors or preservatives", but there is a very long list of what I would call "additives and enrichments". These have to affect the flavor. Goldenfeast has a few "fermentation products", but not all the artificial vitamins that Higgins has.

Now that we're down to one conure that doesn't eat fruit, I was really only looking for an economical way to buy safflower seeds as training treats as well as a few nuts he can chew on. I'll look elsewhere.

More power to you for eating parrot food! 😂 My bird just likes it straight. He eats what we eat—fruit, nuts, veggies. I have to tell my husband to stop eating the bird’s nuts! The two of them fight over mango. My bird will not eat dried fruit. No way, no how. I store all nuts in the freezer and take out about a week’s worth to leave at room temperature. If he won’t eat a nut, it must be rancid! 🥴

I get the Higgins seed mix. My Yellow nape goes into rapture eating the dried fruit chunks.
He dips them in water and chews them with his eyes closed.

Maybe tha added ingredients are the things that go into the pellets that make up part of the mix.
