My worst nightmare is finally over. I feel broken :-(

Hoarders are the worst offenders, and end up doing the most damage, in my opinion. And in their own minds, they think they are doing good...

Don't take in more than you can care for, or if you don't have the facilities to care for them.

And no, the animal enforcement stuff really doesn't work. Been on the frustrating end of this one myself a few times. One of the reasons I walked away from it years ago...

I just wanted to be around happy people who actually cared, and happy animals, that were well loved, well behaved, and well cared for...

You're not the broken one. Just don't expect to change the world all by yourself. It's not a reasonable expectation...

Serenity prayer time... this is the wisdom to know the difference!

What a beautiful bird, and such sweet eyes. Lucky for him, he has a *amazing* 35+ years left on this earth, and it looks as though he will be spoiled beyond his wildest dreams :D (thats a fabulous gym BTW, my jaw hit the floor:eek:). So glad you are legally his now;)

100% agree.

You are a good person, THANKS for saving this Gentle Giant!

One option is to go to the NEWS media, when they show up in front of this MONSTERS house with cameras things may change

If you PM me some of this guys info I may be able to send some WRATH his way or help you plan some action

BTW, how did you make out with the cage in your car?

*HUGS*

I am so thrilled that that poor, beautiful boy is in your loving care, where he will never have to know hunger or abuse ever again. I am so sorry for all you have been through, and I think it is smart to take some time to figure out what is best to do, once you are able to get a little distance from the situation.
Bless you for helping.

I am so sorry for what you have been through. How awful to become emotionally involved with birds in a hoarding situation, when every action you take directly effects the birds.
I think it is very wise of you to take some time to process the experience before you take action. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is walk away.

You've had a such a long sad journey in the last ten months but the photo of your beautiful macaw with his head cocked to the side says it all. I know you weren't looking for a reward, people like you never are, but the look on that lovely fellow's face will reward you forever. I so hope the vet can help him to see again. I wish both of you the very best at the start of your beautiful journey.

Wow, such a sad life that bird had :( Thanks for saving him.

OMG! Your story made me just furious - I cannot believe the state doesn't give a ***! This jerk should be in jail and pay you the money back. I'm glad that you were able to save at least one of those poor birds. But there are others left..
What about trying to submit your story to a local TV channel or a newspaper? (TV is better if you have videos) Publicity often helps to solve such problems, and TV people would be happy to have a "hot" story.

I wish your story surprised me :( I am so glad you got your buddy out, and that you and your husband were on the same page with all of this! People like that break my heart and disgust me.

Having faced that choice myself once, I simply refused to do anything further for the horder rescue, who was really only concerned with making money off the rehome fees, (my friend called this his ransom demand) while passing along the operating expenses, and the work involved, to foster homes and volunteers.

Quietly, behind the scenes, people simply stopped Fostering for him, and advised anyone who would listen NOT to place a bird with him. While it was a bad situation for the birds he had, no one wanted to pay him his rehome fee anymore, and most folks wanted to see his "rescue" set up before signing their birds over to him. (Once they did, they didn't sign.)

When he couldn't make money anymore, and it in fact cost him money, he lost interest in doing it anymore. Eventually, his remaining birds got placed, but sadly, many of them died of neglect...

As an aside, there are places that solicit donations by posting pictures of horrible neglect that tug at our heart strings... where they themselves are the purpetrators. Find out if it's legit before donating money. They may be photos of some hoarder's basement, because this is how they keep the money rolling in. THEY are not helping the problem, THEY ARE the problem. Trust me - it happens!

There are many, many legit worthwhile places that need help and donations. If you give, check it out first, and give only to the ones that are worthy...

LIFE LESSON: THERE ARE TIMES WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO REHOME. I GET THAT. BUT DO NOT SIGN YOUR BIRD OVER WITHOUT CHECKING IT OUT FIRST!!! ONCE YOU DO IT THERE IS NO GOING BACK!!!

This is so sad and infuriating. :( Thank you for taking him out of such a horrible situation. It's good to know he has made his way to a loving home. That climbing gym is fantastic!

Please do contact the local media, he needs to be reported on, and the neglect and cruelty needs to be exposed. A decent reporter will understand that the fault is not all rescue people, but this one man, and the fact that state inspectors have done nothing to stop him is indeed newsworthy.

Now, by the way, would be the time to do it. July is what we call the "silly season" in the local media - very little news usually happens, besides the national and international stuff you see at every news source everywhere.

The legal objection would be "Assumes facts not in evidence..." i.e. that anyone would actually cover it, or that he would not attempt to retaliate against those who snitched on them, and take it out on the Foster birds...

Animal control and enforcement is badly underfunded. What is it, like one or two enforcement officers for a large city of millions of people?! Stuff gets swept under the rug because there really IS NO enforcement. THAT'S THE REAL PROBLEM HERE... It simply doesn't happen. The system is overwhelmed, and therefore, broken. You can make all the laws you want, but if there is no effective enforcement of them, then they aren't worth the paper they are printed on.

This is your reality check for the day.

Sometimes reality bites!
