- I Sun Conure who hatched March 23. 2004. I adopted her on May 8, 2005
I had a Quaker Parrot named Nikki who lived for 19 years
I grew up with Budgerigars named Screech, Zoar and Blue Baby
Today I was doing training with both of them and practicing step-ups and targeting. I use Nikki the Quaker as my model for step-ups because she always steps up. I had Nikki since a baby, she was hand raised. Sunny has a past (was abused) and I had her since she was 14 months. I train them on two separate perches because I really can't deal with them touching each other and getting distracting during the session LOL.
Well, I must have had the two perches too far away because Sunny was not cooperating. She would either bite (didn't break the skin yay!), fly over to the other perch to be with Nikki. She was being a pain in the bum LOL!
I finally found the magic distance and she cooperated. Man, with Sunny it can't be too this or too that, but juuuuuuust right.
I find training them together (each taking a turn) works well because one always serves as a model for the other. Sunny is a very good model good at targeting and Nikki si very good at step-ups.
I do feel like an idiot because I took a lot for granted with these girls. They are almost 18 and I am still learning stuff. Remember that phase you go through when you bring home a new bird? You are reading up, asking lots of questions, thinking about them a lot. I am going through that all over again.
