My pup has a tumor

My dog Sidney (aussie mix) has a tumor in her eye. Breaks my heart. I took her to the Vet and she needs surgery. They can either remove the tumor or remove the whole eye. I hate to do it but tumors can come back so we are opting to taking her whole eye. I really dread doing this. I know its best for her and she will adjust but like I said it breaks my heart. I almost cried in the vets. office. She goes next Thursday for a follow up and we are going to go ahead and schedule the surgery. My husband is trying to be funny and said we will get her an eye patch. She is 8 years old so I figured go ahead and remove the eye instead of it possibly coming back and putting her through another surgery. I wish dogs lived as long as birds did. I felt like I needed to talk about it so I posted on here. People at work think I am crazy getting so upset about this but your animals are your family.

So sorry about your baby. I know what that pain feels like. Been thru it many times over the years. It never gets easier even as you get older. It is like they are part of the family. Good luck with the surgery. She is lucky to have caring parents.

Oh no! I have an Aussie and can't imagine what you are going through!
Is the tumor BEHIND the eye? Or not? Is it on the eyelid? I can't talk for you, but if it were me, unless the tumor was behind the eye, I would just remove the tumor and not the whole eye. Are they planning radiation after removal or they don't need to if they remove the whole eye?
Sorry for all the questions, I just had 2 tumors removed from my ferret so I am aware of what can happen with aging pets.

Thanks for all the nice comments. It's hard to explain, it is attached to the eyeball. It started out very tiny that you could barely see it. It didn't hurt her or affect her vision. So they recommended leaving it alone and see if it grew or stayed the way it was. Well it has grown, she rubs at it and now her eye is draining. They are not sure if it is cancerous until they biopsy it. I hate taking her whole eye but I know tumors can come back and I don't want to put her through another surgery. I know she can adjust. She is MY dog. We have 3 others we rescued when they were a little older but we rescued her when she was 8 weeks so she is my spoiled little brat. Sorry for the long post. I think everything will be fine. Just a worried Mother! Non pet owners don't understand!

Oh! Poor pup. But your doing the best thing. And she will adapt. I have a4 year old blind poodle and he does just fine with his best buddy (a basset ) that takes him every where he needs to go.

Awe, I'm so sorry about your Dog . It's so hard to see our sweet babies go through things like that. Sounds like you are doing the best thing for her.

Well I'm sure you have researched and will make the best decision for your pup! They do adjust so well. And it's true you don't want to take a chance of it growing back.

So sorry to hear about your baby, I can only imagine having to make a hard decision like that for my dog, but you're making the right decision about removing the eye. I imagine operating on the eye would be a much more uncomfortable recovery for her than removing the eye, and the tumor could potentially come back. Dogs are super resilient and she'll learn to use one eye no problem :}

Poor puppy! I think you are doing the right thing though. I can't help but think that if they removed the tumor only, it'd still probably mess up the vision in that eye anyway.

I live with a 15 year old poodle who went completely blind last year. It's a hard adjustment, but your dog should be fine with one good eye.
