hello all . i bought my 2nd parrot 2 days ago . he is a 9 year old hahns macaw with fluffy feathers . i've put him straight onto harrisons high potency food and he loves it. he didnt stop eating it on the 1st day.
when i got him his nails and beak hadnt been trimmed since he was a baby by the looks of it so i got an avian vet to do this .

is there anything i can do to help his feathers come back better ? he loves being sprayed with water so i have been doing this 2 times daily. ive been keeping a close eye on him for a full 2 days and he isnt plucking.

As far as I know, the better food will help but it might take until his next molt to restore better feather quality. Did you ask the vet about the feathers when you got his nails trimmed?

what a cutie

no i didnt. the shop i bought him from said hes probably over preening. and with him having a sharp point on his beak that was causing it.

he is preening a lot most days. perhaps his previous owner smoked in the same room im not to sure. but i do know now hes in a very clean room next do large doors that are opened in the day for fresh air. and hes eating very well. he wont touch veg but he likes apples and plums. going to buy different fruits 2moro.

What an adorable guy-- Hahns are one of my favorite parrots!

We recently brought Stitch to the vet-- he's molting on his chest, and while they didn't see any evidence of him picking or over-preening, they said that daily misting/showering really helps encourage healthy preening behavior. So, keep that up!

thanks every1. i also believe from what ive been told hes been locked in his cage for many years so since he came home with me 3 days ago his out of cage time has been aprox 14 hours per day (no less than 12)

spray in the morning and at night. fed only good stuffs throughout the day and filtered water (because here it smells strong of chlorine)

both my parrots also get 2 harrisons power treats per day. they love these .

My daughter's Hahns Macaw hates bathing of any kind. She will not sit in a pan of water, she will not tollerate a shower, and she hates sprays. Her feathers are fine. She does preen them a lot, and her beak is very pointed as you described. I doubt that is the problem. I would be more suspect of her previous diet. Keep up the Harrisons and wait a year for a complete body molt.

thanks mike. your not the only one to tell me over the past week that its the previous diet. kiwi is now fully on harrisons. been and bought 5lb of the FINE because i was getting a lot of waste from the COURSE because there to big for him.

another thought is for direct sunlight outside each day.

I take my hahn's out in a smaller cage each morning, late morning usually when I take the dogs out before work. I let him sit in the sunshine for a few minutes and it seems to help his feather colors.

He also enjoys seeing things outside close-up so to speak. (Just make sure if he will be out on a really hot day that he has a place to get out of the direct sunlight or he can overheat.)

My Elmo was a rescue and it took about 4-6 months before he really started to adapt well.

He bonded with me immediately but did not seem to play with the toys he just seemed to be preening all the time. He hardly ever screamed etc..
Now he really belts it out, talks and plays w/toys (destroys them),calls the cats.

His original owner died of cancer so I believe he was caged quite a bit. His name at the shelter was NIPPY and he was listed as unadoptable.

Well I changed his name to Elmo to go along with our other family pets (cats Bert-25lbs and Ernie-17lbs).

He is fitting just fine now...

He's my boy!!!!!

What a pretty bird ! Love that green color :). Just beautiful .
Good diet and lots of TLC will probably make a world of difference
with is plucking or over preening.
Time will tell.
Good luck with him :)

I just checked out HealthyBird.net and it's a great website.
I have just checked out the toys and they are pretty different then the
