I know I posted this in another thread, but I want to introduce myself! My name is Allison and I live in the Mississippi Gulf Coast. My family just adopted a 5 year old Eclectus male. We never saw it coming! We were eating frozen yogurt at this place. There was a pet store next door. We love to go in there and look. It was not on our agenda that day because the next day was first day of school and I was just going to Target to get some school supplies! We were drawn in like a magnet. I couldn't say no. We were bent over looking at the conures and quaker parrots at the store. I turned around and saw the male Eclectus. I have never seen one before. He was magnificent! I thought he was a stuffed animal at first! The employee came over and told me that he was an Eclectus and that he had been surrendered by an owner that could not take care of him anymore. She said he is real skiddish toward everyone. She took him out and he jumped straight to my shoulder!!!!! He layed his head on my shoulder. It was as if he is begging for me to take him home!!! The employee was shocked he was so comfortable on me!! I took him home that night! I went out for school supplies and went home with a new baby! I wasn't even prepared! He is so beautiful!!!!! Thank you God!!!

Enjoy your gift, it is a precious gift from God.
Lovely the way he took to you instantly, "love at first sight"

My birds name is Mishka means "Gift of love"
He is truly a gift of love...............................
In a Russian quote they say the name means
"leader amongst others"

Good luck and enjoy each and every minute of each day

Allison, congrats on the new baby.... what is his name? and you MUST post pictures.
I have a Female Eckie her name is Abby and she is 15 months old and just starting to talk.. she is a sweetie.... Males are more affectionate is what I have read..
Please research their diets... they have special requirements... lots of veggies and maintenance pellets are required. Abby is a little piggy.. she love to eat and eats just about anything... especially bakes sweet potatoes, carrots, jalapenos, fresh corn, boiled eggs with the shell. Do not give them chocolate, avocados, onions, salt, peanuts...

You are bless to be the guardian of you new baby..

How sweet, please tell us about your Ekkie like things you have noticed with him since getting him.

I know what you mean about not knowing much about them. I'm in central Florida and the first Eclectus I saw in person was at our local fleamarket about 4-5 months ago. She was a female and the owner who runs a pet shop there said she WAS NOT TAME and to be careful around her. She looked like she wanted to rip my arm off and beat me with it.

The only second Eclectus I have seen in person and actually interacted with was Mac and that was this past Sunday. So Ekkie's in my area are a bit of a rare thing. Cockatoo's, Macaws and African greys you see here quite often, but not Eclectus's. My wife commented about how quiet he was, I laughed and said in front of the owner, "That's the honeymoon phase", once he gets here and settles in after a week or so we'll see. He did make a few clicks, pops, which were distinctly louder than our Senegal. But nothing ear shattering. But like the owner told us, he isn't overly noisy (They all say that), but he will make an occassional vocal call especially in the morning or evening. But his is true with most all birds.
