Caiques are so fun!!! Haha Im so happy I decided to get him, despite everyone telling me I shouldn't. He's so spoiled and loved. The only thing is he goes after my dog and she's so sweet to him!! I feel bad because I tell at her so she won't walk on him. I usually don't have them out together, but my dog is 12 and VERY much bonded to me. She's my baby and we have a very strong relationship. Does anybody know a way to help? I've been having her sit near him as I give him treats and tell him to be nice to the doggy. It seems to be helping, but any other suggestions??

Glad you have having so much fun.

Please whatever you do not let them be out together.
You dog could become extremely jealous having been your close companion for many years.

Both are very unpredictable you NEVER know when an unfortunate "accident" will happen.

Believe me "accident" do happen and some have the most tragic endings.

Well, I understand the risk involved when they are out together, which isn't often. I completely trust my dog. She doesn't get jealous. I've brought so many animals into my home whether to pet sit or my pets. I understand she can step on him though, which is why I'm careful. She usually just lays down and sleeps because she has arthritis and bad hips. She doesn't move very fast either. I just don't want Meiko to attack her. I don't expect them to be friends or anything, but I'd like to have him playing on his toys and let my poor dog sleep. :(

Also, she was friends with my Quaker. They got along beautifully. So, this isn't her first encounter with birds. She likes Meiko when he's not biting her. Haha

So Meiko is a little feisty firecracker, yes? :D I don't think Caiques realize what size they are. They'd take on a dinosaur if you'd let 'em. :54:

Your poop doggy must be wondering WHY this wild, feathered thing is after him all the time.

Caiques are (can be) extremely aggressive towards other birds. I myself don't take any chances [they do think their bigger than they are) Yours is a baby and really sweet right now.But they are confident little guys. I read this in a book once -This guy ended up turning his whole house into a rescue. He had his rooms set up like the amazon room ,cockatoo, Macaw etc. He was asked if any were caged [and if their were problems] . He said no they were all on perches [no cages] . Except he had to lock up the caiques. When together out they formed a gang and tried to take on the whole house !!. Being a Caique owner this made me smirk [cause I know exactly what they were talking about].

We're having similar problems with an old cat. The cat is 11 and would be perfectly happy to lay in the window all day. Bunsen & Beaker just see a big furry play toy. I think Caique's are like the bratty little brother. I'm trying to avoid that one day that older brother snaps and beats the crap out of his feathery sibling.

Oh, and Wendy, they'd TOTALLY take on a dinosaur. When we're driving them around town, they growl at cars if they get too close. Car vs Caique? Really?

 HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! That's hilarious!!!!! They don't know their own size (limits).

Don't laugh--given the experiences with my two, I suspect they could take down a car as well!

Haha Thanks everyone. He does think he can take on the world. Then he gets scared and runs to me!! I'm sure he'll grow out of that. He is getting better with the dog, but maybe any suggestions on how to make him stop? Is it just a trait I'll have to live with? I wish I could get together with all my fellow caique owners!!! Nobody lives on the west coast it seems :(

what a cutie!!! I also have a dog that ive had or many years and I completely trust her with my animals though I always supervise them together I really dont think shed ever do anything to harm them shes scared of my Lorikeet though cause he chases her off lol I dont know of your bird will ever like your dog I know my Lorikeet wont ever like mine!

I loved your comment "they'd totally take on a dinosaur" I have a Parrotlet that is so sweet one min. and then cussing you out the next. She'd definitely take on a dinosaur too, if it got to close. Hahahaha!

One more thought, I'm not sure your flock and your pack will ever get along. I've heard a lot of stories about keeping foot toys handy to distract your Caiques, though. When you're all on the couch, maybe keep an extra stash? Our guys are so ADD. I've heard the same from most Caique owners.

SQUIRREL!

Oh and Derek, Caiques + dinosaurs = extinction? I think we might have stumbled upon something.

Brilliant! You're a genius! Let's get to work: we need to write a paper for Scientific American, not to mention getting an agent!
