Meet Pocket - the Hahn's Macaw

He started making "eh-o" sounds this morning! I'm saying "Hello" back to him to see if he'll develop it into a word yet.

Currently at uni, and I miss him. :'(
Sounds like a good start.

I'm sure he misses you, too :-\

I'm currently working out how to Parrot-Proof my office. Talking to one of my friends about it and saying how it's like baby proofing.

Our conversation currently:
Friend: Haha, except that a baby probably wouldn't be able to get into the small gaps or on top of the shelves... Or chew into things xD
Me: Unless the baby was Jack Jack. Jack-Jack Attack. on Vimeo
heh :D

I contacted the Pet Store earlier to see about ordering in a playstand for my office so he doesn't have to be caged. :3

I've got about 6 fish tanks in my office currently, and one of them is on a stained wood stand so I'll have to order in covers for the tank hoods to stop him chewing on potentially toxic wood.
Indeed! You can't be too careful when it comes to these guys :58:

Woo! Just ordered a playstand for him :D

The perches are removable so I'll be changing them over to wood based one's once he destroys the plastic ones XD
Very nice :)

I can't speak for any other Hahn's but Scottie doesn't chew his perches. He has several different kinds including wood and one that he stands on when he eats that he rubs his beak on after he eats. He chews and destroys his wood toys just not his perches. He is also really funny about where he goes potty. He only goes in one spot in his cage and when he is with me he is potty trained to paper. Such a quirky little guy but he is my guy and I love him!

Hey, Thekatsmeow: I see you're using our MOA insignia within your signature... do you plan to join our group sometime soon?

(sorry about being off topic for a minute here, Alisana)

Hmm, Pocket doesn't care where he poops. XD He's almost pooped in my hair once - got my shoulder instead. He adores my hair though... I have long, thick black hair and he loves hiding in it and nibbling on it.

I'm thinking of making him a little box that has leather cords hanging from the top so he can run around inside and play in it too. :)

All good :D I put the MOA insignia up the moment I got Pocket ^^ I thought it would be weird having it in my siggy when I hadn't gotten him yet, hehe.

Thanks. :)

I originally tossed up between a Jenday and the Hahns. I settled on the Hahn's though for their BIG personality in a small package. :p

Maybe a stupid question but did you buy your bird from a breeder? I would like to find a reptuble breeder that breeds min macaws or conures. The mini macaws do not seem that easy to find.

Yup. There are a few different mini macaw aviaries here in Australia - let me know if you want a list and I can recommend some. :)
I live in the US so I may not be able to buy a bird from Australia.

Ahh - sorry, I thought you were from Australia. :D

All good - there are a few US members on here with Hahns; if you have a chat to them, they'll be able to recommend a few birds.

The only US place I'm aware of is TheParrotUniversity. Not sure which ones they breed though. Otherwise try your rescues - macaws are much easier to come by in rescues in the US compared to Australia.

No check up - purely social. :) He was a hit with the ladies ;) They all adored him. hehe

Wow, you're progress with him is coming quickly! That's excellent :)

Gorgeous little guy :)
Another hahns in Queensland! Looks like his settling in well.

I think it's safe to say that Pocket has adapted extremely well. He has begun his wonderfully enriched, long life with you and he looks so happy and he's absolutely beautiful in your photos! I'm so glad for both of you :). Thanks so much for sharing :).

Thanks for the reply :) I think when I registered I did not put in my location. I would like to go see Australia sometime. It seems like a great place to go visit or live.

Pocket is adorable, and I love the name.

Thanks. :)

Hi Alisana,

I was reading through your posts about Pocket and have fallen even more in love with the Hahns Macaw. I had already made up my mind to get one and your experiences have confirmed it. I am located in Australia - I saw that you knew of a number of aviaries in Aus that sell them. Could you give me a list of the breeders?
Thanks so much.

Dave

Congrats! Pocket is quite the cutie :)
