Meet Pocket - the Hahn's Macaw

Awww...what a sweet little parrot. I know you will have many wonderful loving years with that baby. I had a Noble Macaw for almost 18 years. They are a subspecies of the Hahn's macaws but they are a little bit bigger with a horn colored beak. Here are some pics of my beloved Mihijo.

A dream come true for the little parrot. Mihijo LOVED food.

Enjoy Pocket. He is so precious and reminds me so much of my best friend Mihijo.

He is doing very, very well!

I had work today (9-5), but apparently he was quite content chilling at home keeping himself amused. (Mum watched him today)

He came out and sat with me on the couch for a bit and played around with some toys, and I took him to the bathroom with me while I went for a shower and he just happily strutted back and forth across the shower rods and occasionally chewing the towels.

Had dinner with him earlier (bowl of fruit salad with grapes, lychees, apple and passionfruit) which he ate with me. Now he's back in his cage, happily munching away on a Brazilian nut. Out of cage time was about an hour and a half today. I'm trying to get him comfortable with out of cage time, but getting him used to it bit by bit.

Cute pictures. Part of me desires a macaw for a second bird. I currently have a green cheek conure. My first green cheek conure was when I was a kid. Would a mini Macaw be a good choice for a first Macaw?

Thanks. :)

I originally tossed up between a Jenday and the Hahns. I settled on the Hahn's though for their BIG personality in a small package. :p

Update:

Today Pocket came and had a shower with me! He actually flapped around, fanning his wings around in the water. I really, really wish I could've gotten photos of him showering but my waterproof camera is off for repair. :p

... He wouldn't dry himself though, so it took me a good half hour sitting there toweling him dry.

Managed to get him mostly dry before he finally decided to finish the job and preen. XD

Maybe a stupid question but did you buy your bird from a breeder? I would like to find a reptuble breeder that breeds min macaws or conures. The mini macaws do not seem that easy to find.

It sounds like Pocket is settling in nicely :)

It's so cool that Pocket is learning the routine and dealing with things so well :). He strikes me as such an energetic little dude :D

Yup. There are a few different mini macaw aviaries here in Australia - let me know if you want a list and I can recommend some. :)

Hello to you and Pocket! I also have a Hahn's and he amazes me more every day. Today he was behind me on the couch yelling at the window for over 30 minutes when he over heard my husband and his friend talking on the other side of the room. I am surprised they could hear each other because he was really giving someone quite a sermon, lol. All at once he stopped yelling and in a very clear voice yelled out "Don't say a**hole. We don't say that." We were all very shocked and sat in silence for a minute then just had to laugh which Scottie joined. I have been working with him because that is a new word that he picked up. Their speaking ability is unreal! It is garbled for a bit then all of a sudden, perfectly clear. One word of advice. He had a Happy Hut for almost a year now and I recently had to remove it. I hated to do this but I read too many articles on how quickly they are able to fray the material and harm themselves or worse. Its been suggested by many of my avian peers that I remove his cute little sleepy tent so I did. On another note I am glad you realize how active they are. They love to be upside down and love any toy they can spring on or off of. Have you seen your baby hop yet? It's the cutest thing! If you don't have one yet, I suggest a boing.

Thanks for the advice.

Haven't seen the hopping yet. He has two boings in his main cage, but he's being kept in his sleep cage until I have him more comfortable, and until I get the patio enclosed with cat netting.

I was tossing up the Bed Buddy/Happy Hut for his sleep cage only - rather than in his main cage.

We are currently outside on the patio - he's eating in his sleep cage at the moment while I'm out here on my laptop. :D

Hahnzel, our Hahns is quite energetic as well and also scary fast on those little legs.

One thing we do with our Hahns is to let him fly back and forth between my wife and I for really good exercise. His wings are "show clipped", only the outermost 2 flight feathers are left on either wing, but he can still fly about 10-15 feet before losing altitude. We find this helps to tire him out at night before bedtime.

My vet told me this is a great way to keep him strong, and also to get good airflow thru his lungs on a regular basis. We treat him to verbal rewards and cuddles after each succesful flight. Now he repeats us when we tell him, "Brave Boy" afterwards.

Also, not sure how fine "cat netting" is, but if its too fine his legs and wings can become entangled in them possibly leading to the loss of a foot or death if he is not monitored constantly.

I had him out before and he flew a few laps in the house. His flight IS getting stronger, but his landings aren't the best yet. :p Plus he get's 'stuck' on picture frames (lands on the top edge and I have to grab a chair to get him down because he won't fly back off)

The cat netting should be fine. A friend of mine uses it for their flock and they have sizes from budgies, conures, princess parrots, an amazon and greenwing using it. I'm not planning on having him unsupervised while outside anyway - we have a fridge, TV, table and I can bring my laptop outside while he does fly around. :)

I'll post some pictures when it get's installed. :D Won't be for a few weeks yet.

Last night before bedtime - he looovves neck scratches.

Ignore me in the background XD

Awww...that's pretty adorable! :)

He started making "eh-o" sounds this morning! I'm saying "Hello" back to him to see if he'll develop it into a word yet.

Currently at uni, and I miss him. :'(

Sounds like a good start.

I'm sure he misses you, too :-\

I'm currently working out how to Parrot-Proof my office. Talking to one of my friends about it and saying how it's like baby proofing.

Our conversation currently:
Friend: Haha, except that a baby probably wouldn't be able to get into the small gaps or on top of the shelves... Or chew into things xD
Me: Unless the baby was Jack Jack. Jack-Jack Attack. on Vimeo

I contacted the Pet Store earlier to see about ordering in a playstand for my office so he doesn't have to be caged. :3

I've got about 6 fish tanks in my office currently, and one of them is on a stained wood stand so I'll have to order in covers for the tank hoods to stop him chewing on potentially toxic wood.
