Hi all,

Need your help urgently, this is regarding a young blue gold macaw that a friend recently bought called Mango. So Mango squawks the whole day, has a keel bone thats sticking out and is definitely underweight. Recently it was also noticed that he had undigested food in droppings. One vet said that he has some infection in the throat, one says that he has some digestive issues, no one has been able to diagnose and treat him properly..please help.

PS- The previous owner was feeding him cerelac, which has now been stopped, he is on soft seed and fruit and fresh veggie diet, doesnt eat hard seed:blue::blue:

Many thanks!

Agree with the above. Regular vets just do not get enough exposure or have the ability to run the same tests as a certified avian vet.
Not sure where you are located, but even if it is a sizable trip to get to an avian vet, it is worth it to save a life.

You definitely need to find ONLY a Certified Avian Vet, no "Exotics" Vets. They should have known to run specific tests, starting with a full blood work panel, a Fecal Culture, and then Cultures from the nares/nostrils, throat, and crop/crop flushings. These tests alone will give a pretty good picture of what is going on with this bird...

Also, more information about Mango would be helpful, like Mango's age? Where did he come from? If they were feeding him Cerelac, is he still a very young baby that they were still hand-feeding formula? A lot of information about Mango's history and life need to be filled-in for us to comment, but either way you need to find a Certified Avian Vet immediately, before he gets very, very sick. If he has something like a fungal or bacterial infection throughout his GI Tract it needs to be properly diagnosed and treated. If you have to drive a few hours one-way to get him to a Certified Avian Vet then that's what you need to do...
