Parrots
None at the moment, looking for advice on different species to join our family.
Hey everyone! Iā€™m thinking about adding a parrot to our family!šŸ¦œ However, I have to admit Iā€™m a bit overwhelmed and unsure about which bird might be the best fit.

I have done some research and the parrots that are most commonly recommended seem to be:
ā€¢Caiques
ā€¢Eclectus,
ā€¢Green Cheek Conures
ā€¢Quakers.

We are looking for a specific type of bird that possesses certain qualities. I understand that each parrot, even within the same species, has its own unique personality. I would love to get some insight about people's experiences and advice regarding any of these birds, as well as the common traits they tend to exhibit.

Ideally would like a species that is not just a one-person bird. One that would be happy to be with both myself and my partner. If they can be taught to talk that would be an added bonus!

I do know Eclectus are a bit more difficult given their very specific diet. What draws me to them is there laid back attitude and apparently generally calmer than other parrots.

I've never really considered Conures much before; Iā€™ve heard they can be a bit territorial and tend to form strong bonds with one person. But honestly, thatā€™s just what Iā€™ve picked up from articles and comments I've come across. From what I gather, Green Cheek Conures seem to have a more laid-back vibe compared to Sun Conures. Just sharing what some articles and people commentsā€”Iā€™m definitely no expert!

Quakers stood out to me but I have heard contradicting information. Some say they are great, cuddly and not just a one person parrot, then others say the complete opposite! Hormonal, territorial and very noisy and will only take to one person. So again I have no idea which direction to go with.

Caiques I believe are wonderful birds and seem to be popular choices.

We would love to welcome a bird into our family! Our goal is to have a feathered friend who wonā€™t be cooped up in a cage all day, but rather one we can interact with and enjoy together. Ideally, weā€™re looking for a bird thatā€™s friendly and engaging, though we understand that some nipping can happen as that is part of having a parrot!
Weā€™re simply hoping to find a species that is less likely to bite unexpectedly and one that can bond with more than just a single person.

We're excited to find the perfect companion so any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! šŸ˜Š

You should add Pionus parrots to you list. People here rave about them but they're harder to find. Might be worth the wait.

I've heard that Caiques, as playful and beautiful as they are, can be very domineering for such small parrots.

A lot has to do with the individual parrot and how it was raised/treated. And even then you cant tell. My youngest son helped hand feed Salty as a youngling, but past puberty, Salty absolutely HATES him on sight! My wife also handfeed him, and does some of the daily chores for care, ut Salty only deigns to let her pick him up from the floor or sometimes get him out of his cage. No snuggles, scratches or otherwise for her. If all members partake in daily handling the parrot, the chances go up. If you get a young bird, sometimes playing hot potato, in a circle with all members, taking turns holding, talking etc, that can help. Best done every day for a long time.

Hot potato? I'd like to see what you're talking about. I've never played hot potato other than to toss an object, presumably a hot one, back and forth. Would a baby parrot enjoy that?
