Hi everyone! Hope you all are having a wonderful holiday! Iā€™m looking to purchase a good cast iron skillet, but Iā€™m worried Teflon or some other chemical could be hiding in it (Iā€™ve heard of some ā€œcast ironā€ skillets containing harmful additives. Do any of you have this particular brand, and has it affected the birds in any way? Thank you!

Lodge is great. We have a dutch oven by them that we use all the time with no ill effect. Just don't cook FOR your bird in it, as cast iron adds iron to food-good for us, not so much for the birds. Happy holidays!

Agreed lodge is great. When you initially season do it in the BBQ or something outside. Afterwards, when you re-season it, don't let it get smokey its not necessary. Just hot enough to barely burn your finger is fine. Which is not very hot at all. We use grape seed oil for the re-seasonings.

Never place cast iron cookware in a dishwasher!
You will be faced with re-seasoning it!

As you likely know, its a quick sink wash, rise and dry on the stove just hot enough to dry the surface.

Great statement about seasoning the cast iron cookware outside!

Thanks everyone!! All of these tips are much appreciated! Enjoy your holiday!

We love cast iron, Lodge in particular. Its either that or stainless steel for us. Revere-wear copper bottom is great stuff!

I would caution you against trying to season the pan with your birds in the house though-- if it is pre-seasoned, you are probably okay, but to season yourself (if not seasoning while cooking) it can create a lot of smells etc. Never put it in the dishwasher and do not use soap on it if you can help it.

Revere ware is my go-to (the vintage copper bottom...dang...they'll be none left if we keep promoting it Wrench LOL! )
