Just curious, what exactly is ESA?

Emotional Support Animal, much like a service animal but for mental health. You must have a documented reason for the animal and the animal must be trained to do 3 tasks that support normal life style for the handler. This is per federal law. It is a federal crime to pretend a pet is a service animal.

Ok, this is what I'm confused about. I get why people would need a leader dog or what-not. I also get why someone who is emotionally fragile would need a pet. But how would an emotional support animal perform trainable tasks to give emotional support? Wouldn't that just be being cuddly? If there's no physical handicap, what tasks would be required? The emotional support I would assume would come from being cuddly and cute and needy. What other tasks would they have to perform? (I'm not commenting on the Jacob thing, just this subject in general)
Thanks

Some tasks can be to calm there person down. My son has a dog that is trained to lick and nip him until he focuses on the dog and not what he is feeling. I know of one Grey who tells his person who has some major issues that he is OK and everything will be just right.
Other tasks can be a alert if the person is a runner so help can find them or getting them to eat if they are not the type who remembers to feed them self's.
signal when its time to take meds.
Force them to pick up phone or answer door.
get up on time
Act as a buffer between person and public
Give them a reason to leave the house daily
and the list goes on...

Like another poster, I'm wondering about some simple ear plugs for the sleeping housemate. Or, there are great little oval earbuds that are noise reduction and very comfortable to sleep with, so they keep out the noise and if wanted , she can play some nice soothing white noise in them.

It's like tuning out the world and fillig your auditory senses with calmness. P.S. I bought a pair by Duracell on sale for $6. and they are great.

ESA is an emotional support animal, not a service animal. The service animal have to perform three tasks. ESA owners have to have a letter no older than 6 months from their psychiatrist/psychologist stating their need of that animal in public and they are still not allowed everywhere meanwhile a service dog is. When I train dogs on the train Ive been jumped by the conductor that I need the letter, and I have to explain the difference to them. /facepalm On top of that me as a trainer don't need ANY of the above as long as I just tell them animal is in training for this this and that now shut up.. I had a woman trying to stop me from stepping on the bus with a pit in training, and she called her boss up, I told her go ahead, Ill happily slap the bus company with a law suit and winked at her. She told me she hates dogs.. sighs.. humans.. I had a cabby once telling me that service animals are dirty and shouldn't be allowed in public... yeah you meet all kinds..

We have tried ear buds, or she has.. the walls are thin in this house.. but he will not just get dumped tomorrow either. Im trying to keep him quiet and they know I will wait until right home comes along. We have also tried to change his/mine schedule to match hers better, sometimes I have the blanket on him day time to quiet him down more, I try to put my dog walk instantly when I wake up (Im out for a couple of hours) to wear him out and let him scream his head off outside, and it works to a degree, problem is now he gets excited when I start to stir because he will get to go out so now he screams because of that.. again its not for long just enough to wake her up.. and now he has learned that Im up despite blanket is on the cage so he will call for me anyhow..

I cant have him sitting on me 24/7 cause then eh's mainly quiet, Ive tried that too the days Im home, but that leads to a complete different set of hormonal issues and is not encouraging his independent play that we have trained on.

To the person who posted in here, you have been a member for a short time, I would want a whole list of references and knowledge level before I'd adopt him out. Including which avian vet you are using, also if I saw right in your album you have a daughter a husky and two birds? (yes Im a facebook stalker) and I someone who's been on the forum for a longer period would have to vouch for you as well... as I said, this bird will not just been thrown out to first best person...

Oh and Kalidasa, a service animal can be emotional support as well, but an emotional support is not always a service animal. ;) Hope that makes better sense.

I'd just like to say that you have picked a GREAT Avian Vet, Will! If I lived in North Jersey, he is the ONLY person I would ever use for my birds. :)

My Georgie came from Amwell Bird Hospital too. She was one of Dr. McKinley's babies when he was breeding them.

I have seen the house. I love the huge aquarium.

Well Im trying to find those earbuds wanna be talked about. They could be a real solution.

Meanwhile, how long have you had your birds? How much bird experience do you have? You guys sound nice but when it comes to Jacob Ill be picky.. And you say you want a friend or Sol, problem is they may not like one another what so ever, then you have three birds that won't get along and now you have to give them all time separately. I think that you would likely be better off trying to find someone closer that Sol could meet a few times to ensure they like each other.

And there is an adoption fee on him so people who goes birdcrazy and wants to collect a whole plethora for free gets discouraged or that tries to flip. And that is if those earbuds don't work... the fee will be 350 but cage/playstay/carrier/food/toys will come with him and he has been vetted as well because he was found outside.

I will by no means get back the around 1000 k the bird has cost me with everything when you add it all together.. be warned he goes through toys like nothing else when it comes to wood and chew stuff..

No she was talking about the ones with sound... So its a sound directly in your ear like white noise to remove other noise. Im hoping they are conure proof :p

I'm more then Willing to bring Sol over if you and Jacob want to meet her and see her for yourself that would prob be best if the ear buds don't work (which I hope they do ) Sol likes being in the car especially in the summer lol ... I understand your concerns and they are valid ... Just know I'm not bird or Animal hoarding lol it like an hour drive but I'm drove longer for less lol
