Just brought home a young cockatoo, looking for advice :)

If he was actually grinding his beak not snapping it I always took that as a contented sound. Not sure in this situation. Likewise the wing and leg stretching I've always associated with comfort and contentment.
To me it sounds like he is really not upset. Probably more confused as his world has just changed and parrots generally don't like change.
He’s definitely not snapping it. He’s also yawning/preening/eating in front of us which in all my other pets are signs of comfort. Thank you for your input btw :)

IMO you are reading this right.
I think you're off to a great start.
Time and patience.

Great idea!! Thank you! I’m not really afraid of the pain, especially if I’m using my non-dominant hand, but it would suck if I somehow got part of my finger broken. Not entirely sure if my Too could even do that though, but either way the risk is part of the responsibility so I wouldn’t fault him for that
Even a small
Too is definitely capable of breaking a finger but it's unlikely to do it. I'd worry more about jagged flesh wounds to hands because a tendon can be damaged and infected and require a hand surgeon to repair it. Hands have extremely complicated nerves and tendon. Also watch for facial wounds. They can be hard to repair without major scarring. My Casper never really hurt anyone but I wouldn't let people play with him near their faces because he would jump and try to grab their eggglasses or noses. I didnt want to be sued! You shouldn't let your bird sit on your shoulder unless you trust it complete not to take a bite out of your face. Some of our very experienced members won't let their parrots have shoulder privileges after being badly bitten without warning.
