5 Cockatiels
One of my cockatiels has laid an egg.
I have 4 cockatiels 2 for sure male (Babe and Lucky).
1 that I am fairly sure is female (Pinky) I think she has laid at least one egg before. Pinky’s story is complicated.
And one relatively new bird (Sunny, had her about 8 or 9 month) sex is not for sure yet but we do think female.
Before the egg showed up I noticed Pinky was breathing differently. Her whole body was sort of moving up and down. I don’t really know to describe it.
Unfortunately the egg can’t be fertile because there has been no hanky panky with the male cockatiels.;)
Should I provide a nest box for the females?
If so I will need to separate the male birds from the female birds because the male birds don’t let the females go in the boxes. If I separate the birds I will never have fertilized eggs.

Do you want to breed your cockatiels? Or do you want to prevent your hens from reproducing?

If the males wont allow the hens to enter the nest box, it doesn't sound like you can breed them anyway....

I would love to have babies but as things are I don't think it will happen. the 2 male birds are bonded to each other. Can't stand to be separated even long enough to take one into the shower for a bath.
If I am right about the sex of the newest bird then I am still out of luck. 2 females = unfertilized eggs.
I guess me real question here is should the two female birds be separated from the two male birds?
The two male birds only just tolerate the females in the same cage. they have been together for over a year (except for the newest one)

If they get along as a flock, I see no real reason to separate them. However, if they don't get along, or one is not getting enough to eat, then yes, separate them.

Thanks, I have separated them. girls on top boys on bottom. one of the girls keeps going down to the bottom of the cage and "teasing" to male bird to the point that he chases her back to the top of the cage.
It's been almost a week and only the 1 egg.
