is this plant safe?

No, it's not bird safe.
If you want to look up information for yourself, it's a dieffenbachia.

Dieffenbachia (also known as dumb cane, in some circles) is a well-known poisonous indoor plant- it's recommended to keep them away from young children, too.

As we live in an open plan house, which is not mine, so not modifiable, I have to be extremely careful with house plants. One I found, which looks really good (especially after I cleaned the leaves with an oily cloth- the nursery here has a water supply with something of a salt load) is the Metallic Palm (Chamaedorea metallica). It's a relative of the common parlour palm, and as far as I could find in my readings, not dangerous for birds.

Any plant with white milky juice is usually poisonous. I have poisonous plants in the house, I just keep them away from the animals as I'm a huge fan of plants. I raise them and I give them away. :)

I gave away a heap when we moved to WA. This state has strict quarantine laws, and our intended next state, Tasmania, is just as bad. So we don't want too many plants this time as the paperwork is a nightmare (plus we have to fit them in the car for a 5000km road trip :)). If it were my own place, and not constrained by interstate quarantine, I'd have wall-to-wall greenery ;)

Mike,

Are you serious? I don't blame you getting rid of them either if you have to file a ton of paper work just for house plants. That's kinda crazy......
