I know Macaws are known for spreading their wings in an attempt to intimidate people. But what about spreading their wings to invite scratches or while being scratched? Is it a personality thing or do most do it?

I saw that in your video yesterday! It looked like he was taking a bath, but was getting scratches instead. It was very cute. Mine doesn't do that, but she has her own little quirks like.. biting the end of her tail while covering her head with her wing.

mine opens his wings when im scratching his chest and sides... im guessing he likes it.

Okay so I had a hollowed out coconut toy I gave him that he destroyed. So last night at the store I got a real coconut, since i read its good for them to eat. Its cut in half.. and half is on top of his cage, but he keeps trying to sit on it... is he a she?

The Macaws that I have cared for have spread their wings both to intimidate, and to invite scritches. Watch their eyes. If pinned with blushing & screaming....intimidation. If happy & playful...scritches. I love the OW! OW! HELP! scenario.

yeah it's normal i guess. a friend's macaw does that too.

He was being a bit assish this morning.. I gave him his fruit and veggies, and asked to pet him and he wouldnt turn around so I went to walk away and he says "stop! come here" and turns around. So I scratch him and he growls at me. *sigh* I'm afraid my birdie might be female....

The next minute, trying to EAT the coconut..

Then Mojo sits on the coconut. Mojo growls when the coconut moves, puts his head in in, bites it, then sits on it again.. rinse repeat..

And just a cute pic :)

Beautiful bird! I don't own a macaw but my U2, Amigo, who I'm pretty sure is male, will sit on a golf ball as though it were an egg. He will protect it from predators, (our dogs), nuzzle it, keep it warm...totally bizarre but super endearing. I'm guessing that both male and females set on their eggs.
