I have a beautiful Blue and Gold named Zoey (13) and a Harlequin named Harley (4)
hey guys, so a few weeks ago I was asking questions about my hormonal blue and gold female. it seems that this process has ended but now she has taken complete control over my bathroom, and a towel and a whole bunch of newspaper. She has been going into my bathroom often lately but she had never bad the mess she made today. should i leave it? should i take it away? how do i know if she is going to lay an egg, how do i know if shes just having fun and not nesting? shes never laid an egg before and she just turned 14. please tell me what i should do? should I just let her sit there until she decides its not fun anymore? she does let me in the bathroom and i can sit and pet her and shes her usual sweet self but just with me, no one else is allowed in that bathroom at any point in time lol.

helppp

Doesn't sound like it has ended at all - but significantly picked up.

You've got quite a determined girl there. Please do NOT let her sit on the towel and/or shred the paper because she IS making a nest. The last thing you want to do is encourage her to lay an egg.

Yes, she may be having loads of fun making a nest, but under no circumstances would I allow her to continue.

so if she doesnt have a nest she wont lay eggs is that correct? this is my confusion. are the eggs already in there ready to come out? or will this nest making produce the eggs to lay?

No, she doesn't have to have a nest in order to lay eggs, BUT, actively preparing a nest indicates that she may WANT to lay an egg. It doesn't mean her body has produced one already.

My YN goes through very similar phases, and I discourage it at all cost. She HAS laid before, some years ago, an entire clutch of 3 eggs inside her food bowl.

I don't allow her to shred anything, or go into hiding places, or do ANY activities that she may conceive as "nest making".

so i walked into the bathroom to take it away and she did this. im not sure if shes playing or if its still a hormonal thing!! i took it away and now she looks like she hates me lol. shes walking around looking for other things to shred. like i asked before will she only produce eggs after the nest is made? and if she does already have eggs waiting to be laid and she does not have a nest will she still lay them anywhere? i do have a male macaw as well, but i keep the separate at night and they only see each other and play during the day with my supervision so i highly doubt the eggs could be fertilized. will she get sick if she doesnt lay them?

Perhaps it's a good idea to not allow her to roam on the floor while she's in that "mode". She WILL find something otherwise, no doubt in my mind.

Again, NO, they don't have to have a nest in order to lay eggs. They don't even need a male present to lay eggs. Of course if she DOES pop out eggs, they won't be fertile unless your male mac successfully copulated with her.

And yes, if she HAS eggs and can't pass them, then you have a potential problem. It's called "eggbound".
