Is my conure sick?

Hydutt (GCC - 4.5 years old) and Hero (Budgie - 3 years old)
I just realized something.. my conure doesn't chew anything except paper towels. I used to buy him lots of toys but he was never interested in playing with them so now he only has a toy with wood pieces hanging. And he doesn't chew that one either. His only joy is to eat food ( whenever he sees me eating something he gets excited and flies to me to get some) and cuddling with me. But after I watched some conure videos and pictures here in a facebook conure page, I started to think that my green monster is not that much active or chewy. He is almost 5 years old, he is free and flying at least 8 hours weekdays and almost all day in weekends. He follows me around in the house (he is not just sitting at one spot, he is interacting). Does anyone else have a gcc with similar character?

Perhaps Hydutt is simply not a player and chewer. Given his generous freedom outside the cage and plenty of cuddling, he may be very satisfied. Were he suddenly cage-bound more of the time, he might develop an interest in toys and chewing.

Doubt he is sick if this is long term behavior. Has he had a baseline visit to a certified avian vet?

I have a Yellow sided green cheek and a pineapple sided green cheek. I donā€™t think yours is sick, I just think that maybe wood toys isnā€™t his thing but I would keep one in his cage anyways. Try getting him some toys with bells and large beads so he cannot swallow them.

Echo, my Yellow sided hated wood toys. I got him some wood toys with bells and for some reason the bell changed his mind about toys in general. Everything in his cage needs to have a bell now. I also have a toy that has a bunch of charms and beads on it that are big enough that Echo canā€™t put them in his mouth and he goes crazy for those as well.

If you get even more concerned about his health, maybe taking him to an avian vet would be a good option too. My avian vet lets me call her if I have a question and she will answer it. She will tell me truthfully if what she thinks my conures are doing are a cause of concern or not.

Yes we visit our vet pretty frequently because I get concerned about everything single change. He has a very nice bell I recently bought but he is not playing with that either. His interests are very limited to food, cuddling, and having bath. He has been with me for 4 and half years now and he has never been too naughty in terms of chewing. Oh well, once he chewed my bedroom door from one edge to another while I was sleeping, now he is not allowed to go there anymore. But that's it.

I donā€™t think heā€™s sick if heā€™s always been this way. My GCC loves to chew up his toys, but Iā€™m sure not all of them do. If youā€™ve noticed a sudden change, however, that would be a reason to take him to your avian vet.

Mushka is hit or miss with toys as a general rule. She hardly spends time in her cage as well so that may be part of it. On the other hand I just got her a Bird Kabob and she thought it was the best thing ever. It was destroyed in a day. My guess is it's just your conure's personality like the others have stated.

Thereā€™s this neat foraging toy, Iā€™ve only found one bird place that sells the item though. Its like a mini pinata that you can stuff with treats and such and hang it in the cage. Tango tore through it within 3 hours and had it completely shreded. If only I took a picture of it before he destroyed it!!! Echo, who doesnā€™t really like toys all that much except for the bell loves that foraging toy, he will destroy it quicker than Tango does.

Is it from paper?

They just have their preferences. My conure was given all the top end toys, foraging, chewing, noisy and the such, he even had his own bird paper roll shredder. His all time favorite toy? A plastic bottle cap. I now perfectly understand my mother's frustration over me enjoying playing with cardboard boxes when I was a child
