I got the flight suit in the mail last night. It looks too small to me. It was the size that was suppose to work for YNA. Looks more appropriate for my RLA that is smaller.

It will take some time before I am able to try to put it on him but he is not frightened by it (a good sign).

I am not planning on training him to fly. He has a strong dislike for my wife and it would make it more difficult to have him out of the cage if he could fly (and potentially attack my wife).

anyway I think I will have to call the people that make the flight suite and order a second one that is more fitting (ha ha) for my Bingo.
the one I got will not go to waste as I may be able to get Pacho (my red lored amazon) into it.

Pacho looks to be more scared of the flight suit than my bingo but I will take it slow, no rush.
Pacho also has never been able to fly. I got Pacho for a pet shop that was re-homing her and I don't know much about her history though she could be as old as 39 years.
Perhaps one day soon I will have TWO go anywhere birds.
My son could handle Pacho and me with Bingo.

hmm. I live in an area that experiences high and usually dry temperatures. So long as I limit the exposer to 1/2 hour or so I don't think it would be a problem. I guess I will have to make sure to keep some water and a bowl handy for them.
If I see any indications of distress ie panting I can keep a misting bottle of water also.

Hahaha! When people talk of teaching a bird to fly, it's actually a reference to working on both their confidence and skill level. Funny enough, Christine (Christinenc) made a similar point not too long ago regarding that phrase. Seeing as how this is at least the second time it has come up since then, I may have to think up a new phrase for it. "Building flight skills", perhaps?

Anyhow, are you looking to build on his flight skills?

As for the flight suits, I never knew that they were attached to the flight lines by velcro! That's just crazy! Is that the case for all flight suits?

Free flight is so interesting to me but i have never seen them use the term Teach bird to fly. Most use recall training :) Most of the time the " teaching a bird to fly " Has to do with the bird never being able to fledge / never learning. At least that is what I think

Yes all Flight Suits attach across the back. Its kinda crazy how they attach. You actually unfasten the Suit slip in the leash and press back . It really is not safe. Also if you have a Fid that freaks easy I imagine that ripping sound the velcro makes will not go over well.

Yeah, teaching the bird to fly is, for the most part, a term associated with birds who were never allowed to fledge. Their potential for learning flight skills is never again as great as it is during the fledging process, which is why it generally takes a more concerted teaching effort for birds who have been forced to miss that window.

Wow. I've never held one of those flight suits to get a feel for the strength of the velcro grip, so I suppose my opinion is more or less uninformed, but I couldn't see myself trusting velcro to keep Maya or Jolly from flying off. Scary.

Thanks for the video, Christine.

As far as teaching a bird to fly who has never fledged, I will never forget (years back) I had a Slender Billed Too who was not allowed to fledge. I let her wings grow out and of course even with her instinct to fly, she just couldn't control it to the point she was just pitiful at it. At the time I also had a wonderful female Ekkie who had amazing flight skills (she was raised properly), and SHE was the one who taught the Too to fly. It didn't take her long to learn from another bird either. I was amazed at her control and skills. By hanging out with and watching another species' example, she became a very skillful and graceful flier in no time.

About the flight suit, that velcro just makes me cringe! It needs more than that! Texsize, like you mentioned, maybe sewing in snaps along with the velcro will give it added security.

Edit: I'm sorry the suit is the wrong size. I'm not surprised, if you went by their size chart. I noticed the chart is pretty 'off' for a lot of the species. Besides, I've seen YNA at way different sizes from each other. Maybe better to call the company and give measurements instead. Good luck getting a good one for Bingo.

That is amazing. Most i see that use the flight suit also use a harness. I know double stuff on the bird but they are not designed for the same thing.

Thanks Christine. I only WISH I had video of it. It was about 10-11 years ago. I wasn't taking vids with my phone back then lol.

If I get a flight suit I will consider using the harness at the same time. I would hate putting the double stuff on him but if he accepts it, then it's better to be safe...

I believe Venus wasn't allowed to fledge. Since I got her she has never flown other than to jump off a couch to the floor and fluttered her wings. She does flap them when she is on my shoulder, she'll hold onto my shirt, I bow my head and she goes to town.

Today I took her to the vet in her travel cage and we have high winds right now. She was fighting to stay on her perch, lol. She got a little blown by the wind but not too bad.

My B&G wasn't allowed to 'fledge' properly (MUCH to my dismay, since I had literally INSISTED she not clip him). Oh it was sad. For a long, looooong time. :( Niko was only allowed to fly 2 or 3 times before he was clipped.

Then he was clumsy. Each time the flight feathers were coming in, he'd have an ungodly accident and would break blood feathers. It was truly a nightmare!!! After 4 years I thought he'd NEVER have a full set of wings.

Well, he FINALLY has them. He's going to be 7 in October. :54: He HAS flown with 'almost' all of his flight feathers, and has had horrible accidents. He 'flew' again last night - if you wanna call it that. :32: Luckily my husband was at the end of the other room to catch him or he'd ended up with (another) concussion. :11: But hey, he managed to flap wildly, made a 90 degree turn, and in total about 20 feet. I'm not giving up hope. :) I even have a 'new' idea on how to get him into a harness....but I won't share that idea or I'll be scolded. :10:
