Is falling off perch normal?

It's a vet for all pets, dogs, cats, birds, turtles, etc. I told them Carlos was an Amazon.

He is in a flight cage for cockatiels etc, they said there was more than enough room for him. I know the possibility of the bars snapping, but it was all I could fit as we only have a car. He has never snapped a bar prior, he does not chew or try to escape. My husband said he doubts he will ever break a bar.

Yes he is normally steady, he eats and drinks all the time so no issues with that. I would say it's probably just fear, and maybe a past wing wound that they never took him to get fixed. Either way we shall find out today. :)

Edit: Oh she never provided me with any papers, she said he was a year old when she got him and she had him for 6 years, she said he is 7 years old. So technically there is no way to prove that... The lady herself was pretty young maybe around 30ish? So I doubt he is too old, at least I hope not anyway for his sake.. :p

My Monty has fallen a few times - usually when he underestimates how much he weighs, or overestimates how good his grip on something is. He'll give a good squawk, then hop back up and get back to whatever he was doing.

One thing I did notice was Monty was clipped pretty young. As his feathers have grown out a bit more, and he's using his wings for balance more, I've had to rescue him less (especially on his playstand where the bars are narrow).

Hopefully everything checks out with him OK. I was a new parrot dad a very short time ago (just like I was a new human dad much longer ago), and just like with kids, it takes us some time to learn just how durable these little guys are.

Thanks Scooter. I have a 2 year old little girl and when she falls even on her bum I get so sad. Worrying is in my nature, but I'm sure you're right they're more durable than we think.

My appointment is in an hour & a half so I will keep everyone posted.

Well I'm here at the vet, the bill is over $300... Semi bad news... He is healthy so far, BUT he is missing his arm! The doctor said from his wrist down! He said he was not born that way in his opinion, he thinks it was an injury that happened with the other home. He said he will never fly. :,( and this is why he can't perch the best. Other than that his weight is healthy, he's healthy, etc.

I almost cried, Carlos was whining he didn't like being held and his nails clipped. He tried to bite the dr and fell but not far. Dr said he's okay though.

I'm getting him sexed in case, blood checked, protein checked, stool checked , etc.

I'd say the lady never ever took him to the vet. I hate that he may have been abused, but I don't hate that she couldn't afford him because he's safe with me now. $300 plus is a lot for just the vet not including other things especially Carlos himself but he is worth it. I bought him and he's my responsibility and I will insure his safety.

Next Wednesday all the blood work etc will come in.

Oh honey! First of all: HUGS to you

You are awesome for taking him to the vet, doing ALL the right things by him/for him!!! So he's missing part of his wing. It's a VERY tiny handicap, believe me! Birds (animals in general) cope MUCH better with missing digits/limbs than people. Carlos doesn't know he's 'different'. And he doesn't care either. :) He is used to this, for however long he's been like this.

Was the vet able to tell you whether this is a possible birth defect, or if this is something that was caused due to an injury?

He's in capable hands now. He's much loved. And THAT's what matters.

I know you are forking out a good amount of money right now. But it's worth every single penny. :)

More of these for you:

Good work Joseph,

If he's pretty much healthy right now, getting the blood workup is a great idea so you have the baselines in case his behaviour changes in the future. We'll be doing this with Monty when he hits 1 year, and is a great insurance policy.

As long as you provide a good environment, love, care, and patience, everything will be fine with Carlos. And yes, they make horrible sounds when being manhandled, but so do puppies, and any other creature which is displeased with the situation.

He said the injury was more than likely not a birth defect, he don't know how it happened but it happened from his other home.

Thank you for the hugs I definitely needed that. Hugs. :)

Yea the dr had to scruff him and poor Carlos was whining and I felt ready eyed and sad for him, thankfully now he's doing alright.

Kristin, it'll all be all right!!! He's in capable, loving, caring hands now. Shame on his previous owner! THANK YOU for getting him out of there!

KUDOS to you for your diligence! Please keep us posted, ok? :)

So am I understanding you correctly?
He is missing a portion of one wing?
As in something amputated a portion of one wing?

It's technically more than his wing, he's missing his arm from the wrist down.

See, I'm having a hard time picturing this because I don't think of it in terms of "arms" and "wrists."

I'm picturing an amputation from the carpus on back in one wing, is that correct?! And it's throwing his balance off?

I can tell you that my Mom had a handicapped one winged bald eagle at one time (power pole electrocution & fall/amputated wing)... that had a great deal of difficulty perching at first, but gradually became better as he learned to deal with his handicap.

He will never fly with that sort of an injury, but you will never have to clip him either, and he can be an out and about bird... and still play in trees and such. He can still have a good life.

He is missing the part in the front all the way down, the doctor described it only as the wrist down.

Mark, without a picture at hand, it almost sounds as if the poor bird, Carlos, was pinioned (one sided) :(

Poor guy. Thank you for taking care of him. Sounds life he's going to have a wonderful life with you!

This is what is missing pretty much, this image is the right side, his hurt wing is on the left. I would have taken a better image of the left side but he was busy eating. I did an outline the best I could showing where his arm is missing! He can never fly again, but I fixed his cage to accommodate him.

I posted a pic of all his toys, I bought him a new one today near the back there... He loves them all, I also bought him that rope to help him traverse his cage better. Doctor said to keep him lower in the cage and so forth.

What you've done for this handsome little guy melts my heart! I'm thrilled that he found you. The new cage set up looks very comfortable. I'm looking forward to watching Carlos thrive under your excellent care. Hugs and happy thoughts to both of you.
