I hate speculating, and it seems that's all I can do with second hand information. So I'm ordering some lab equipment to do some tests, and I'll make a new thread just for that. If anyone has some good suggestions of what to test, go add to that one!
 
In a quick and personal opinion, any food is only as safe as you prepare it.

We also have to remember that a parrot's digestive tract is not at all evolved from their wild counter part, and if we think about all of the bacteria/potentially hazardous microbes they consume in the wild, plus parasites, and yet they still miraculously survive for years... well, you get my point.

The amount of harmful bacteria on your cell phone alone is grotesque. Even in some people's beards. My previous boss did a smear of his beard and he grew an impressive fungus out of it. It was an awful smelling Petri dish, but it's certainly eye opening how well our immune system protects us.

Plain and simple - if you choose to sprout, be diligent and aware of the risks. If you feel you aren't diligent enough to wash it or feel it's too risky, simply don't do it.

I am a very gullible person and easily convinced by facts. Google health benefits of grapefruit seed extract and yes, there are lots of positive references. I think the Wikipedia entry for it has the best neutral summary. Detailed research studies found no anti microbial properties in GSE, and the extract available to consumers contains other compounds, added to it during processing - such as benzethonium chloride and benzalkonium chloride - which are responsible for the observed antimicronial effects in prior studies. More and more, natural health practitioners are recommending that GSE should only be used topically and not taken internally.

I don't claim that sprouting of seeds doesn't improve their nutritional profile - only that it doesn't add any nutrients that can't be obtained otherwise from foods that don't carry the risk of the increased bacterial load created by sprouting seeds in warm, moist conditions.

Really not intending to wave a sharp stick around! I do try to keep most quibbles to myself, but there have been so many posts lately relating to sprouting that I jumped in. I did a lot of research on this a few years back when I was making some dietary changes, and many things - including GSE data - caught my attention, and I've been paying attention when I see things come across the news. Sprouts I had been on the fence until that huge outbreak in Germany a few years back that killed many people, which made me dig into it again and confirmed my reservations.

Even if seeds could be completely sterilized before sprouting - and they can't - the incubation process would bring the numbers right back up. And it's not possible to completely sterilize the finished product, either, as pathogens can be deeply embedded. GSE is not a selective antimicronial in any case, killing good bacteria along with bad.

Everybody can and will decide for themselves what to feed the fids. I only want to make some contradictory information available to anyone researching the subject. This is what peer review is all about - you show me your sources, and I'll show you mine, and folks can make informed choices based on a wider range of information. Man, I just spent a couple of hours listing links and references, so I got logged out and lost the post. I will recreate it as much as possible ... the summary is that commercial Citricidal does contain preservatives, is effective against microbes (gram positive more than gram negative) and is toxic at concentrations up to 1:512. Why not just wash things in grain alcohol instead of a commercial chemical? For that matter, why does a "natural" antibiotic product need preservatives in the first place?

Starting with the links above: Nutriteam.com is a sales website, and presents no scientific support for their claims, only marketing material. The first thing I did was to see if I could find the actual studies they are downplaying, and I found them using Wikipedia (which contains decent information on the whole, accompanied by external links so we can validate for ourselves.)

Umm, I have to say that separate HPLC, MS, NMR, and PIXE tests are probably not all in error, and that no reputable scientist cares about scaring people away from the dreaded Nutribiotic site. They are more concerned about being contradicted by peers, seeing as how they have to publish what they did and how, and if the study were in error or misleading these contradictory comments would have surfaced by now.

Abstract

Grapefruit seed extracts are used in cosmetics, food supplements, and pesticides because of their antimicrobial properties, but suspicions about the true nature of the active compounds arose when synthetic disinfectants such as benzethonium or benzalkonium chloride were found in commercial products. The HPLC method presented herein allows the quality assessment (qualitative and quantitative) of these products for the first time. On the basis of a standard mixture of 18 preservatives most relevant for food and grapefruit products, a method was developed allowing the baseline separation of all compounds within 40 min. Optimum results were obtained with a C-8 stationary phase and a solvent system comprising aqueous trifluoroacetic acid, acetonitrile, and 2-propanol. The assay was fully validated and shown to be sensitive (LOD < or= 12.1 ng on-column), accurate (recovery rates > or = 96.1%), repeatable (sigma(rel) < or = 3.5%), precise (intra-day variation < or = 4.5%, interday variation < or = 4.1%), and rugged. Without any modifications the method could be adopted for LC-MS experiments, where the compounds of interest were directly assignable in positive ESI mode. The quantitative results of several products for ecofarming confirmed previous studies, as seven out of nine specimens were adulterated with preservatives in varying composition. The samples either contained benzethonium chloride (2.5-176.9 mg/mL) or benzalkonium chloride (138.2-236.3 mg/mL), together with smaller amounts of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid esters, benzoic acid, and salicylic acid.

This is going to rumble on I feel.

Yes, that's correct. Anybody can modify an article. In practice, this often corrects itself. Subject matter experts tend to take ownership of articles, get notifications of changes, and then re-edit them. Articles which get a lot of argument or trolling are sometimes frozen to prevent this. Everything there does need to be taken with a grain of salt, which is why I like to look at the external references as well. I do see the edits made today in the edit history...don't anybody else change it, it will be interesting to see if you addition stays in place!

As of this morning, the Wikipedia article has reverted to the non-test version. Details under "about this article". Wikipedia is fairly resilient.
 
I am curious as to why no one has mentioned the use of unfiltered apple cider vinegar as a "disinfectant"... does anyone use this with success when sprouting...
 
It’s perhaps not in this specific thread but it comes up occasionally. I think GER ducked up the oxygen in this particular instance :)
 
I love sprouts in a salad or sandwich, but I've heard so many bad things about them that I don't feed them to my family or bird. I will eat them, however.

Same thing with raw oysters (not that parrots eat raw oysters) but I love them and take the chance. If I die from it then that's my fate.

Because (just my opinion) it is just another mildy acidic solution - so apple or not is irrelevant.
Lots of people swear by it because is sounds good ("all natural" so it must be safe and all that kind of populair talk).

Good old common sense / prevention : use the freshest materials, handle with care (sprouts are living babyplants after all) work as hygienicallly as possible are way more important than quickly desinfecting afterwards imho.

Easy for me to say ;) I do not have to deal with crappy quality tapwater, my fridge is clean and working just fine etc. so that makes things a lot easier.

But it always gets to me that "use apple vinegar", "desinfect with chloirine" etc.etc. are always mentioned but "make sure you thouroughly wash your hands before handling sprouts" *never* gets mentioned. :p

(not saying that 'beter safe than sorry' is not the best way to go!)
 
Nope. I will not feed them to my birds. I'm not willing to take a chance.

If I read even one scenario of a bird dying from something, I freak.
 
I'm relatively new to sprouting still but find it fun, easy and the birds enjoy them!!

I use apple cider vinegar to disinfect the sprouts, it's safe and I've never had any adverse effects. It actually also helps keep it fresher longer in my opinion. It does the same for fruits/veggies soaked in apple cider vinegar solution too.

When prepared with common sense (know when to rinse, clean) and stored properly, sprouts are safe for parrot consumption.
 
Abba's approach is different. Their seeds have a lot of hard minerals mixed in, and at first, I was a bit concerned. Their approach to sprouting is to delay the first rinse. At first I didn't understand why, then it clicked! The growing seed pulled in the minerals, thus making it usable for digestion!


This really made me go "WTF?!".

The "miracle" of sprouting is: the seed uses everything inside to grow, instead of getting stuff from outside.
Not untill there are some (hair)roots is the plant-to-be capable of absorbing nutrients from outside the husk- so this story reads like utter nonsense to me.

All the energie and minerals etc. needed for this proces are provided by the parrent-plant. (Just add water, and the right temperature and they are good to go.)

That is one of the reasons it's so hard to succesfully sow orchids: extremely small seeds, so small reserves to get the new one started in life (and we don't use those for sprouting).
 
All things in moderation would be a good way to go. personally I try to change up what I feed.......this week may be something sprouted....next week it will be a new fruit/veg. I have found that if I won't eat it neither will 'Baby'.....

Not everyone, of course, but I think some people brag about sprouting seeds for their birds because it sounds "edgy", or "trendy".

Kind of like breastfeeding. It's a personal choice.
It doesn't make you a terrible parront if you don't feed sprouts to your fids. :rolleyes:
 
Oh, brother! I just bought a sprouting kit! I love sprouts myself in salads. I get Crunchy Sprouts at the grocery store. You have to use within 3 days. You can tell right away when they've gone bad.

Dr Jason Crean advises on his avian FB site to use GSE so that is two notables now if you include Leslie Moran also.

To start with the Kidney Bean is not one that I would sprout and on any lists I have seen, anyone with a shred of common sense should realise that if you have to cook it for so long to remove toxins then sprouting it is not going to do it, is it?

I always use GSE (Grapefruit Seed Extract) as recommended by Leslie Morán. This has been shown to be effective against 800 bacteria and virus strains, 100 strains of fungus and a large number of single cell parasites. FYI studies have also concluded that GSE is effective in killing numerous gram negative and gram positive bacteria, fungus and yeast including but not limited to staphylococcus, strep, candida, salmonella, e-coli, and giardia. Due to it's natural antibacterial and antifungal properties using GSE during the soaking process when sprouting for birds as a preventative measure will stop bacteria and mold before it can even get started. The antimicrobial properties occur at very low concentrations.

Sproutable foods have between seven and 40% protein, during germination starches are converted into simple sugars, protein chains are broken down into their basic amino acids, fats are converted into soluble fatty acids and vitamins are produced. Sprouts are a rich source of Vit A, C, E, B as well as antioxidants. For example Vit C in Oats increases 600% after sprouting.

I believe you are wrong in your recommendation not to feed sprouts and suggest you have a look for Leslie Moran and do some research. It is not possible to 100% guarantee that any food for ourselves or our fids are completely safe and in this day and age of money and profit margins rule, will get harder as short cuts are taken to produce food for this well overstocked and wasteful world.

Foods that can be sprouted fall into 4 categories: seeds, grains, legumes and nuts. (ALWAYS BUY GOOD QUALITY FOODSTUFFS TO SPROUT ESSENTIALLY ORGANIC)
Seeds - fenugreek, flax, millet, pumpkin, radish, sesame, safflower and sunflower.
Grains - amaranth, quinoa, unhulled barley, buckwheat groats, brown rice, wheat berries, rye and whole oats.
Legumes - alfalfa, red clover, adzuki beans, mung beans, garbanzo/chick peas, black turtle beans and french lentils. Soy and pinto beans BUT NO KIDNEY BEANS!!!
Hi, do you think it's safe to buy each organic seed then mix and sprout? It's just so expensive to buy pre mixes for parrots so I thought I'll buy each one. Also trying to figure how to do the same with freeze dried or dehydrated vegies to do a chop/mash? I found many stores that sell organic and you can mix for a mash by just adding hot water and soaking. What do you think? I need to financially cut back.
