Im on the verge of buying a six year old grey

Hi Smittler

We just have 2, and yes they are adoptions out of a rescue/sanctuary
One is a 35 year old double yellow head amazon
The other is an 8 year old African Brown head. We got them at the same time in September last year.

Is there a big difference with the older birds? How has the 35year old adapted to life with you?

Hehe this is the first time ive heard of someone adopting a 35year old:)

Im so excited, 38 hours to go and im going to get my birdie)))))

Bosley adjusted really well, it took about 4 days before he let me touch him.
It took about 6 weeks before he would step on my arm and he still isn't consistent but pretty good.
His original owner had him for 30 years till he passed away. His son took him for 2 years but it didn't work out. He was in the rescue for 2 years and in that time he wouldn't step up for anyone and would only let one lady scritch him on occasion. I think the difference with older birds is that they take a little longer to trust, but they bond very strongly when they do.
Bosley is my little cuddle bug these days, preens me, loves to cuddle up and go to sleep on me.We still have a ways to go, but I am enjoying the journey.

I am excited for you, remember lots of pics and stories. Great people on this forum if you need advice or just want to run ideas by us.

i heard him say a few things like 'hello, *****, shut up' and he imitates a police siren.

There was a grey in a rescue that I wanted to adopt but decided I could only care for one bird atm. It knew how to say

"I'm sorry, please don't"
"I won't do it again"
"I promise I'll be better"
some swear words
and could imitate police sirens perfectly.

I feel awful thinking about how he could have learned to say those things.

That breaks my heart reading it, I cannot imagine hearing it. I hope he found a loving home~

When you try new foods just remember that they may not take to it right away and make a big mess. I try different ways like the size and shape of the vegetable if I am chopping them up, different location. Sometimes, you can cut back on their normal food. If they are on seed diet, try a safflower (sp?) instead of sunflower. They can have most things you eat except, chocolate, onions, avocado. I know apple seeds are harmful. There is a list i think somewhere on here for all the foods.

Hey everyone))

As i write this im sitting next to my new friend charlie :)

Im so shocked at how he seems to have taken it all in his stride, i brought him home, he went straight into his cage, and LITERALLY within five minutes he started chirping and making us laugh. My mum sneezed and blew her nose, he immediately copied her, that made her start laughing and of course. We then had parrot laughing too:) he
Let my mum handfeed him, which is great considering he allegedly hates women. He makes a certain chirp everytime you leave the room, and as for him making noise when alone, its true, i went intomthe kitchen to hear a chicken clucking, police siren, wolf whistle and all sorts coming from the other room.

I really didnt expect such a quick start from him, he looks really content and chilled, the only thing that im not sure about, he is standing on his left leg, with his right leg up and is feathers are all ruffled. I readthat means he is happy. Is that right?

And earlier he was wiping his beak vigourously from side to side on the cage bars, is that normal?

How can i add photos here?

Just Awesome!!

Yes standing/sleeping on 1 foot with feathers slightly ruffled is a sign of contentment and sleepy nap time. Beak grinding is also another sign of contentment. It sounds like he's making himself right at home, making noises and eating treats right away.

Wiping beaks on bars and perches is completely normal typically done after they eat or drink.

On the reply box, go to advanced settings use the paper clip icon for attachments, a box will open up and tell it where to find the picture and wait for it to upload.

Congrats again!!

Aww he sound like he's going to do just fine and already settling in.

Odin was like that, we got him home late and the next morning he came right out of his cage and joined us on the couch to hang out and acted like he'd been here for weeks. I I leave the room and shut the door, he start whistling and talking up a storm... if I dont close the door, he just comes and gets me :D

Hey guys, something incredible just happened.

I let him out of the cage for a wonder. And he just walked up my arm, it took him a few times to build up the courage to come up my arm, but after a minue or so he walked right up my shoulder and regurgitated his food on me, and then kissed my cheek and lips. I expected this to take months, im amazed at how quick he is.

He has already started to copy me, he can do my laugh. And unfortunately he has a habit pf doing loud burps (this isnt from me))) i was eating my dinner and as he was staring me i told him - no, its my pizza, his reply - a huge burp hahahaha

Its like he's been here for years

Just an update six days in on charlie.

He is doing great!!! He has accepted me straight way. ive never been thrown up on before and actually been pleased about it, but ive had that every day for almost a week now) One night he even settled on my shoulder and went to sleep, he really has taken to me, and believe me, the feeling is mutual:)

The past two days he has started to get a little vocal, last night i had a shower amd came down to cover him up for the night, as soon as i came through the door a little voice said 'going to bed', he has started to speak quite a lote, but not all of it is clear and understandable yet, but i know he'll get there, he is suprising me every day.

Consider yourself lucky that your new friend took to you so quickly. Sometimes they come with lot of trust issues (not misplaced) and they take their time with a new person.

Best of luck to you both.
