I'm in love with a Lorikeet, will I be a good mom?

Hello,
I've been visiting Skittles, a Blue Mountain Lorikeet, at a local pet store for the past two months. She and I have bonded and I'm now in love. I have a few questions for the lorikeet parents on this site before I adopt her.

I'm a full-time working woman, will Skittles be okay at home along with a cage full of toys for the eight hours while I'm at the office? I plan on having her out of her cage and playing with her the moment I arrive home.

Also, I have a room-mate will Skittles be too noisy at night? We have a very quiet household, will Skittles be terribly loud and noisy?

I do some car traveling, is it safe for me to take Skittles in the car with me?

Thank you for taking the time to write to me. I'm very excited about possibly adopting my new little friend.

First off, Welcome to the forum! :)

I am sure anyone can be a good birdie momma, but there are a few things you need to take into account.... Would this be your first time owning a parrot? What kind of reearch have you done (If any)? Are you truly commted to spending two hours (atleast) with your birdie a day? Are you prepared to feed him/her the proper fruits/veggies? Also can you finanially afford a bird? Birdies cost so much :( (but are worth it, in my opinion) and you need to pay for his/her, cage, toys, new toys, food which can be rather costly, vet bills, etc. Birds get bored easily, so are you prepared to do training to keep your parrot non-aggresive (is that the word?).

Parrots live for a long time, and are a big responsibility and a life-long commitment. I haven't actually ever owned a Lorikeet, but I do know that they do sleep at night so noise in the middle of the night shouldn't be an issue, and yes, it is safe to take her in the car, assuming you have a proper carrier that can be buckled intoa seat.

Here are some links to information on Lories. I may have not been much help and other members can assist you a bit better :)

Vet bills are a real killer that's for sure. As long as you are educated on the subject, can afford food, toys, cages etc. and have time to play with your bird then you should be fine. I work all day (7:30 am-4:30 pm) and come home to play with Bella and feed her and she is fine. They do need 10-12 hours of sleep so it's important you make a schedule that works for both of you!

Welcome to the forum! blue mountain Lories are Georgous. Congrats on your possible new baby :)

I know that Lorikeets have very special dietary needs and watery droppings (some things to keep in mind)

I believe with all parrots there is a possibility for a very loud bird but it can go either way. Is she/he very chatty and vocal at the pet store??? Also you said you have a very quiet household so that will help keeping noise levels lower :)

There are safe ways to travel with parrots and you can make it a fun adventurous thing the two of you do together. Here is a thread for you to check out http://www.parrotforums.com/macaws/6318-riding-cars-birds.html

Your excitement and love will go a long way in making you a great birdie mom! Stick around the forum as well, it is such a wonderful resource!

Best of luck!!!!
