Illiger Macaw Foot Swollen by TOY

Don't panic yourself with toys now, please, and don't blame yourself either. Accident can happen to anyone.

Is he using the swollen foot at all or is he just holding it up and tucked under? Have you seen him put weight on it?

If he's not using it, I'd have him x-rayed as well to rule out any breaks or ligament damage.

As for the emails, wait a while, I'm confident she'll get back to you (at least I would hope she does.)

If any part of a toy has a chain or some type of cord material (such as a string or a rope) and that chain or cord is long enough to wrap around your bird's neck, even if the chain or cord is threaded through drilled blocks of wood or other objects, IT IS A RISK and can threaten your bird's life.

she put's weight on it off and on......and she briefly used it to eat with before she dropped the nut.....

Don't most all toys have either chaines or ropes...i've been in contact with dr scot mcdonald about the foot talked to him extensively he advised me to wait to see if swelling goes down and since she is using it he thinks she'll make a full recovery

she's putting weight on the leg off and on like i said but i'm slightly worried that the foot is slightly warmer than the other foot

Yes, many do. The point is it's always a risk, especially when the chain or cord becomes exposed and most especially when the bird is at home alone. They can become looped around the bird during play, and if there's an object hanging from the chain or cord under the looping, it turns into a weighted noose. Weighted nooses are a serious concern and can easily kill a bird!

Then that's the advice I would follow.

It's going to be warmer than the other foot since the tissue is currently inflamed. That should subside in time.

Thanks everyone for responding making me feel better.......dr mcdonald said that really there's nothing to do.....she is puting weight on it so I'm hopeful she'll make a full recovery

I'd say that should provide some good peace of mind for you :)

right now she has cradeled herself on her back against my arm putting now weight on her legs.....she does that once in a while anyways.....you know what is so strange about this when i went in there to put them to bed the illigers was making no noise at all.......but the catalina was going off big time as loud as I have ever heard her and she kept going and going....so i looked at her to see if anything was wrong and she got out of cage and jumped on sprites cage getting louder and that's when i noticed the illiger....

They certainly seem to know when something isn't right with one of their housemates.

I knew a GW (the breeder where I got my Niko from had him) who could literally have NO hanging toys in his cage whatsoever because he would hang himself on everything.

On one occasion, when I was visiting my baby boy, said GW went absolutely berserk in his cage, and when I went running over to him, he had a stainless bell wrapped around his neck. The breeder came running over, hollering for help. It took 3 people to get him free and out of there, and the breeder ended up with THE nastiest bites I had ever seen. Once she had him freed, and checked over, she was rushed to the hospital to have her hand and fingers stitched.

Who would have guessed that such a harmless, simple toy could do that.

From a simple stainless bell!

That's So scary! I absolutely dread the thought of something like that happening.

Shortly after I got Zaf in 2005, I met someone on a bird forum who used to own a young female Hy named Belle. He posted her pictures. She was a beautiful and sweet bird. He described how he once had to leave her at home alone and when he returned, devastatingly, she was dead. She had somehow hanged herself in an open quicklink. I can't imagine how or why she would have placed her neck through the opening in a quicklink, but that's apparently what occurred :( It just sickens me to think about.

Parrots are just like kids, when you think you've got all bases covered and they should be safe they go out of their way to do themselves harm on something completely innocent looking. Are wooden toys really safe? can they get into trouble with splintered wood?
You just have to be as careful as you can and trust and hope.
Taking all the toys away is not the answer as they are just as likely to hurt themselves falling off their perch. Casper is terribly clumsy especially when he is in a hurry to get to his food dish.
I wouldn't give up on that toy, just keep all the loose threads trimmed back so they are short enough that she can't get in a wrap situation. Always look for ways to learn from mistakes rather than just giving up.
Also if you have rope perches check them over every once in a while and clip off any loose threads. This advice comes with the perches but it is very easy to forget.
I hope she makes a rapid recovery, give her a hug from us. Let her know she is getting global sympathy!

That toy looks like a death trap in so many ways. Perm rollers ? Does she get those new or second hand from a beauty shop once they are worn and the rubber bands are no longer taunt ? If they are used that could pose another possible hazzard. Permanent wave solution has to be bad if not potentially fatal to birds. And hair bands with plastic beads ? Id the rubber bands still attached to the hair band beads ? That parrot toy is made of some very odd parts.

there's a picture of toy somewhere up in thread

UPDATE: today it looks like sprite's toes is slightly less inflamed which is good...but she is losing alot of tail feathers from the incident as the tail was caught around rope to...I have to watch as as she loses the feathers blood often comes out with them......she's very active though.....hoping for the best,,,oh btw i did get a letter from the president of the bird club which stated he was going to pinpoint who made the toy and to tell her of the dangers i hope he tells her to stop making the toy period...boysmom the perm rollers are purchased new
