Parrots
Monte..Scarlet macaw, Seminole...yellow napped amazon, Starburst... sun conure...Rain, cinnamon green cheek.
But my wife has taken a job with Petco. She's going to be working in the bird section...I told her about the bad things and warned her that a national chain won't probably care about the birds, just the price if each unit...

But, jess is the "can do, will do anything to make a difference" type...and I hope she can....before this place exposes her to a bunch of negative .....wish her luck..today is her first day....

Im always amazed at what people willing to do what ever it takes can make a significant difference ..... Best of luck to both of you..

O geez I really wish her luck. Pet co is one of the worst ive heard a lot of bad things about the bird care. Maybe she can make a small difference but if it is about money then the care goes down to what makes the most profit sadly:(.

Well she knows a lot more about birds than a lot of people...so....a plus...now if they'll listen to her or even give a dang...that's another....

She said she actually had a decent day...

We all try to make a difference. Maybe she will. They say that saving 1 bird will not change the world. But, for that 1 bird, the world is changed forever! Hopefully, she will educate a guardian to the proper care of the birds, and make a difference 1 bird at a time.

I used to work at Petsmart, I was the self proclaimed bird expert and I feel I helped a lot of people. For me it was changing a life one bird at a time.

I love the petco near me, they are the best store and everyone there loves animals and knows so much. One guy even has his masters degree in marine biology and has a pet timber wolf(exotic permit), rescued African gray, myna bird, and a a big snake. I feel the store is very lucky to have him.

On the other hand I have been to some pretty bad petcos & petsmarts. The worst pet store I've been to is pet club.

We have a Pisces Pet Emporium that has MONKEYS, just because. They dont sell them, but I personally think they have no business supporting that sort of venture. They also have a parrot as a mascot who just sits in his/her cage all day while people walk by. They dont let him/her out because he/she bites (big surprise your untrained and unloved bird bites people). I was disgusted when I went there, and even though they have the best prices I havent been back. I do my best to avoid pet stores that carry animals.

She's already helping people it seems..a lot of people with conures that are just eating seeds...more fruits and vegies...

She's big on pellets and bird health...including keeping them stimulated and active. So...I hope she'll do well.

Personally I think it's great what she's doing. There are aviaries run by horrible people just as there are good people working in stores like Petco. From what you've said of her she is going to make a difference everyday for the birds there and the people who come in.

Good for her.

I really want to do that; work at a bad pet store and at least TRY and help to improve it, but I'm not old enough to have a small job yet, though I do plan to do that at one point. :)

Well it appears that I am wrong..this Petco is allowing her to look over the birds, ones that are questionable are getting pulled and brought to their vet, who is an avian vet...

I have a hole new respect for this petco store...they genuinely care about their animals...

So this Petco is bird lover approved..:)

Lol...dang redheads....

and of course that "temper" thing comes into play as well... :D
My wife is the epitome of a redhead in that aspect....Not like I'm the easiest guy in the world to get along with either :54:

Crazy, iffin you were closer and I could afford it, you'd have a job right now LOL!!! :11::D Our new work schedules are not to the flock's liking, and I keep them up late just to spend time with them.
Besides, I would get a kick out of watching you try to handle the GW's!! :D:54: Get Tab and y'all can work in shifts LOL!!

We have a scarlet , a yellow napped Amazon, 2 budgies, and a sun...j took in a big red...but he didn't make it past his abuse :(

But thanx :) Monte was so abused that I take each bite from him as a hail Mary for abusers....

Our local pet store is pretty wonderful, a fairly small place but they LOVE their birds! It's where we got Wilbur, and they loved having him come for visits whenever I was driving in the neighbourhood! ALL the staff would come out to the front to say hi and he'd be passed around for "visits"...LOL... they are good people!

If nothing else, she can at least give good information to potential buyers on good parrot care. Out of curiosity, I've taken those free "care" sheets for parrots they have and read them over. They are extremely vague and often confusing on key care points. If she can clarify and inform that family who just bought some parakeets, or the person looking at the conures on good care to begin with, she's done a good thing (and at no cost to the company, they are actually paying her to talk to customers). I think a lot of times, those places stick someone who's never owned/researched birds in the bird section, and that's where a lot of issues stem from.

There is a petco that is 10 minuite drive from me, HORRIBLE information . I never ask for advice there, as Yasmin I want to work there in the bird section. Though there are only two separate jobs, caring for the birds and being the expert in the section like giving advice. Confused, though I will get one when I'm eighteen !

I think it's a wonderful idea. If more caring people started working at more places that sell or breed animals, then their compassion may just rub off on the other employees.

Now, I can't say anything about Petco. We don't have one around here. I have bought from them online and enjoyed the experience. But if someone has PERSONAL knowledge of Petco abusing or neglecting their animals then I hope for goodness sake that you don't do business with them and take your business else where.

I have been in several pet shops and have never seen a pet shop totally neglect their animals and why should they, that is their livelihood. Do the animals get the same care as if they were in someone's home? I doubt it, but then again I have seen some homes with animals that I thought was criminal.
