I ran out of Baby Bird Formula

Arrowroot biscuits, hard boiled eggs and maybe some minced apples should do the job. Even any other wheat biscuits mixed with hard boiled eggs, make sure to mince and mash properly and break down well to the right consistency with some warm water. Rice as well can be used but the other ingredients are much better

Baby formula isn’t a bad idea, just make sure there’s more grains than vegetables in the mix.

Asked my mom who successfully hand-fed 3 Goffins abandoned by parents after just a few days. This is the home-made formula shared with her by a breeder-friend. Please note this was from 25 years ago, not much on the internet at the time!

Zupreem monkey chow biscuits
Assorted strained fruit and vegetable baby food from jar
Pablum brand baby cereal (if not, rice or wheat based cereal substitute)

Ingredients cooked in a pot until thin gruel, cooled, placed in ice-cube trays and frozen. Defrosted in microwave on very low setting before use, temperature tested before feeding. Keep in mind she needed supply on demand for initial feeding every 2 to 3 hours!

Good luck to you and your baby GCC, please keep us updated!!

Wells can be great. But they can be contaminated. My whole family once got terribly ill from a well that bats somehow got in and pooped in.....terribly sick.
I'd used bottle water for him while a baby

We have ours tested every week for contaminants. PH levels and for bacteria. :)

I went and got some Zupreem cockatiel sized pellets, I mashed them up to a fine powder and put some baby all natural no additives squash and sweet potatoes in it. I boiled some water to make sure it was sterile even though our well produces very good clean water. Better safe then sorry I reckon hehe. The formula will be in tomorrow however I mashed up extra pellets just to be on the safe side. With the issues of the virus and all can't afford another issue like this one. I stored the pellets in a safe plastic container for use for my tiels and for when he gets older. I ordered enough formula to last him thru the weaning process as well so, I wont be running out any time soon.

Thank you all for the help, I was freaking out :( cause I love my little StarCandy baby and I definitely don't want anything bad to happen to her/him.

PS I stored the mashed up pellets in a plastic container as well for future use. I will be adding the other stuff manually to keep it clean. Again TYSM!!

Glad it worked out and that so many chimed in! Keep us posted!

Glad you were able to make do until the formula arrives! As a fee for our services, please post approximately one million pictures of your birds. Haha just kidding, of course, but please do post pictures! And stick around and let us watch the baby grow up!

Well I got the formula monday, as planned and all was well but now.. she has kinda stopped eating all together. I mean she'll eat a couple small spoon fulls and i mean its a small spoon like one of them ones you see in artificial sweetner containers, smaller then even a baby spoon. She will eat one or two of those, and then stop eating.. and run off and want to climb all over me. She is almost 5 weeks old according to the breeder. I would post pics but i don't know how to do that exactly. But I am not sure if I did dmg when i switched her food around or not. :( i have tried what i know to do she wont accept anything after a few mouthfuls. Should i be concerned? I mean she is getting food just not the recommended amount.

is she eating seeds and veggies abd starting to weaning herself?

Honestly I have not tried to put in anything other then water, she did however scream at that and bite the bowl.. lol but she's very playful and active and her feathers are looking great and stuff i dont see any kind of energy loss issues. I thought that may be what shes doing is self weaning from it, cause she eats the first few spoonfuls very happily and very energetically.. i am gonna thaw and warm up some soft veggies *peas, carrots, corn* for her this afternoon and put it on a small saucer and try that and see if she reacts to it well. I know I cant leave it in there that long due to food spoilage but.. i am gonna see if she'll start playing with it and chewing it. She already is picking things up and playing with it in her beak.

I could just be paranoid and over reacting to her just growing up to be a big girl :) she is learning to perch now too i put a small perch in her holding container and she has her "bobby" in there as well and she is running around and preening herself as well. So there is no sign of malnourishment. She is not drooping her tail or her wings and she is very vocal and wants me to finger wrestle with her a lot. Again I think I am just scared, because I am used to her being a "baby" and not growing up to be a beautiful girl like she's becoming. I'll keep y'all posted though.

right click on the image and click "copy image url" it needs to end in .png .jpeg or .gif to work as an image

Well if she isn't eating seeds, pellets and veggies on her own and her only food is formula. Then a drop in intake is worrisome. Weigh daily

Well around 4pm she ate a whole 12cc of her formula food so I really don't know what it is... I guess she just eats what she wants and that is it.

Hey! Well, I have a 2-month-old baby IRN that I got when it was 12 days old. It still eats feeding solution but by itself but twice now my delivery was delayed and I had no other option but to feed it baby formula which was for a 6-month-old because that's the youngest one you get. But it was just for 2-3 days. I don't think anything will happen for a few days, so I think you should go ahead if you don't have any other option. Also since it's 4 weeks old along with the baby formula try to feed it chopped apples, my one started eating chopped apples around that time as well, but not in too much quantity too.

To post your own pictures without having to upload them elesewhere, go to your profile, create an album and upload the image (right side panel). Give it a title etc and post. Then, copy the image code under the picture, click the mountain icon at the top of the message box and paste the image url into the pop-up.

If that is too annoying, you can post as an attachment under advanced, but there is a limit and the picture shows up small (like an attachment thumbnail which must be opened)

Well, I figured out the issue, what was going on with her eating was she apparently wasn't getting enough air in that container (it had 6 huge holes drilled through the lid, but however i kept 4 covered for warmth) so the lack of oxygen was causing her to not want to eat and just sleep. I feel horrible about this but i got her into a cage now with plenty of room and air, and shes doing very well *shes still not eating much formula but is eating, she in fact even ate some veggies today that i chopped up for her*. She is still getting shortness of breath however and i am hoping that with a few days of good clean fresh air that she'll recover. I am praying there is no perm damage.

She is playing and running around however and is not stopping to sleep like she was earlier. Needless to say keep my little StarCandy in your prayers. I do believe she is getting better.

I checked the closest location for an avian vet and the closest is almost 3 hours away. I gave them a call and told them everything they just said keep her ventilated and warm. She has almost all her feathers now except a spot on her back near her neck and some of the head. So I figure she'll be ok in a nice warm room with some fans blowing away from her to move the air around. She seems to be much happier now and more active. So, I am hoping for a full recovery. I just wish I hadn't been so stupid to put her in that situation to begin with. I have been crying all day until after I moved her and I put her outside in this cage on a covered porch for a few hours. It was warm out and there was no winds blowing so I really think she liked it. As a matter of fact she played with toys and ate some chopped veggies. She even was climbing up the cage side and successfully climbing back down again. Her only issue is navigating past the low perch. She is so used to just having an open bottom where she can run. She can perch successfully as well but still she prefers to sleep with her "bobby" (a little stuffed dinosaur that she has had in with her since her arrival). :rainbow1::orange:
