African Grey named Buddy and Marty
re-homed from rescues both are about 5 years old.
I have had baby for about 6 weeks or so now. Yesterday she started hanging upside down from the top of her cage like a bat swinging and making a blood curtailing sound. I rushed to the cage thinking she was caught on something or hurt but no she was just swinging. Once I got near the cage she started talking still upside down so I knew she wasn't hurt. Over the last 2 days she has done this 4 times... I no longer rush to see what is going on I have been ignoring it in hope she will see it doesn't get my attention and stops. Has anyone else seen this? Baby is a 5 year old CAG.

Thanks,

Scott

It sounds like she wants your attention. Is it the blood-curdling sound you're hoping to stop? Because the other things sound perfectly harmless and just playful.

Puck goes on the ceiling of his cage when he's excited.

yea just the scream the hanging is actually kinda cute. it was just the first time I was worried she was hurt because she was screaming as if her leg or wing was caught or something. The scream doesn't really bother me but it bothers my autistic son. She gets a lot of attention but I did notice she gets mad at anyone I seem to show attention to.

Thanks for all the help,

Scott

My first introduction to African Grey's was my Uncle George's bird.

Uncle George had his birds cage hung from the ceiling by a chain and this bird (sorry I can't remember his name) Would hang upside down from the roof of his cage and get it swinging back and forth, and when it was swinging really good...he'd yell..."ROCK and ROLL!! ROCK and ROLL!"

I was about 12 years old and spent my entire time at the family reunion dreaming of one day owning my own bird.

Maybe, if when your Grey is upside down in his cage, you can start saying a phrase you'd like him to say while upside down...maybe that will redirect the screaming.

It works for my male tiels both are developing quite the broad vocabulary...they get to flock calling sometimes, and when I've had enough, I'll just start talking to them the words or whistles they know and it stops them immediately and they begin rattling off all the words and songs I've taught them...instead of screaming. :)

Good Luck,

Toni

That is how Greys sound when they play and have a lot of fun. My Grey does the same thing and I know exactly the sound you are referring to. In my experience, all Greys do that.

that's awesome then. I am so glad she is having fun. Makes my day... thanks

The parrot is trying to attract attention. They also like to make people they care about smile and laugh.

It is similar to a child saying hey mom watch me do this somersault or asking dad to go play catch.

The bird is happy and wants to play. Nothing more.

it depends do you have another bird in he cage with her or not

Birds play in unusual ways. Mine likes to do pull ups with his beak. Also, when he bathes he insists on hanging upside down like a bat while I mist him.
