Hypothetical Aviary

Anyone know what types of bird species can be housed together in an aviary?

I've always dreamt of having one in my house & I got to thinking about it again today & I was wondering what types of birds could go together.

Not small birds (budgies or finches) nor huge birds (macaws & cockatoos), but medium sized birds like conure/senegal/ringneck sized. ?

& if anyone has their very own aviary PLEASE share !!! I'd love to see it

I've had doves, quails, and cockatiels in the same aviary together without any problems.

Please not that I did not have the cockatiel-hating dove in with the cockatiels. =P

I have noticed that birds don't seem to be like other animals where you can really say one species will get along with another, it really seems to depend on the individual birds. I've kept reptiles longer than I have birds and with them, it's a little easier to generalize things. I've made community vivariums with different species without problems and I've helped many others do the same and aside from one account of a crazy brown anole that tried to eat a longtail lizard, I never had problems. I see a lot of people asking what kind of bird will get along with theirs but no one can ever guarantee two birds will get along. My goffin cockatoo for instance even hated other cockatoos. She didn't care that she was less than half the size of our citron, she would still march right over to him and try to show him she was boss.

I think the easiest way to have a mixed species aviary and not have any fights would be to adopt birds that are already living together. There are plenty of birds looking for homes if you look hard enough. Try to get in touch with some local bird rescues, you may even find someone that has birds living in an aviary environment that they can't keep anymore, it's quite easy to become overwhelmed with too many birds, this way you could have the aviary you dream of and help someone out that may have too much on their plate so to speak.

I would trial South American birds, Asiatic birds and cockatoo's if I wanted to have a mixed aviary... I wouldn't mix South American birds with cockatoos or Asiatic birds... I would probably try and mix birds from the same sort of 'area', if you like...

I have seen many midsized birds housed together. You are probably thinking this way because of the way they are caged with their species/bree yap yap and wondered maybe theyre caged seperately for a reason. They dont get along or it just seems wrong. Indescretely, conures I have mixed up with tiels and ringnecks with a conure I wood think wood work but I guess youd have to try it out and keep watch on them for first time and if it isnt too bad can try a day or two and you never know you can have the first macaw caged with quail or zebra finch aviary or some crazy conundrum. May not have made much sense but is sounded good in my head. Just my 2 cents

@ alienus99: Oh God!oh no oh no. that poor budgie !!! D: I don't think I'd ever put something as big as a rosella with something as small as a budgie!! I'm not even sure I'd leave something as big as a blue-crowned conure with something as small as a green cheek, especially in an aviary where I obviously will not be supervising everything 100% of the time.

I've read around that it usually depends on individual birds & that you can't ever say x species gets along with y species because birds just have personalities of their own. A rescue flock would be very nice. I'd probably rescue as many as I could anyway C:

This dream aviary is starting to look like a Green Cheek Conure aviary though. I can get the colorful flock I want with all the color mutations of the GCC & not have to worry (as much) about them not getting along. Hopefully that'll be a little safer than mixing species. ?

Or maybe mixing Green Cheeks with conures like Painted Conures, Firey shouldered Conures, or any other similar sized bird from the pyrrhura family from South America with similar behaviors. ?? How nice would that be *daydreams*

Concrete base is bliss! I used to line my cages with gum leaves, twigs, but it got so messy! Now I just hose the place down and the Greys don't mind one bit
