Huge size variation within species?

That's all really interesting to know! I knew there was quite a bit of overlap between greenwing and hyacinths. Do breeders with the different sub-species ever advertise that they have small or large size?

I've seen both GWs and B&Gs listed as "Bolivian", which should indicate larger birds. I've never seen any sub-species for Hys, but I have seen enough Hys to know there are size differences among them. I do wonder if that is diet related though.
Wendy I thought there were two different HY subspecies. The smaller ones make their nests on the sides of sandy cliffs. The larger ones come from the Pantenal region of Brazil and nest at the tops of tall trees. These birds are huge.

My sweet girl RiverSong was 1.1kg when I got her. She was 5months old.
She's part Bolivian, I dont know exactly how much she has in her though. Think one of her parents was half.
She was clipped when I got her, but I'm hoping to allow her to be fully flighted. I need to get her trained to the harness though so I can take her out places once it gets warm outside. I got the large harness and got her the Mammoth size flight suit, but think I'm gonna have to return the flight suit. It came in the mail but it looks too small. I dont think there's any way she'll fit in it.

Where do you get your scales? I'd like to purchase one so I can keep track of her weight. I haven't weighed her since her vet visit when I first brought her home.

You can get very good digital scales at Bed Bath & Beyond, but you'll save $$ if you order one online. ;)

If you are looking specifically for a digital scale that already has a perch attached, looky here: (You will pay lots of extra if it's "bird" ready).

We just use a digital food scale with a large food crock (food bowl) on it.. If you turn the scale on with it on the platform, it automatically tares out the weight of the bowl!

Works well enough for the little squeaks up to Butchie the dinosaur (Triton sized Too).
