Hi my name is Sarah. I am looking into getting a blue and gold macaw and I was just wondering if it’s a good idea for the amount of time I will be able to spend with it. So I am going to give some background info and say what an average week is like for me and see how much of my time would be good one-on-one birdie time. Also if I get one it would be out at the same time my bird I have now is usually out (except when I give them specific one-on-one time individually each day that I am not going to write down below).
With the being said here we go.
Right now I live in a house, not an apartment so I am aloud to have parrots. I have the sweetest Quaker parrot, I clicker trained him myself; I hang out with him throughout the day.
So an average week goes like this
1.15hr low end – 6.5 hr high end Sunday – get up, get my baby out while I get ready for church, that takes anywhere between 10-30 minutes. Church lasts 2 hours. I get back get him out again and cook up some breakfast where he gets a taste too. My husband takes nap while Romeo and I get some chores done. That takes probably 1-2 hours, maybe 3 hours to cook and clean. Then I leave to go ride my horses (on nice days he comes with me and helps me clean stalls). That takes 2-4 hours depends if we stay for dinner at the in-laws after ridding. When I get back I take him out again and usually catch up on some computer time or TV time with Romeo chilling with me. That lasts anywhere from 1-3 hours, it depends on how tired he is, because when he starts to get sleepy I put him back.
2 hrs low – 5.5 hrs high end Monday – he’s out with me when I get ready (30-90minutes), while I clean (30-60minutes), and relax. I hit the barn for 2-4 hours. Usually do some shopping that takes about 1-1 ½ hours. Then get back and chill with my baby and work on some of his tricks throughout the day. That lasts probably 1-3 more hours depending on Romeo’s mood, sometimes he rather just hangout in his cage (sometimes I just hang out with him in his cage by just petting him in there and talking to him.
2 hr low – 5hrs high end Tuesday – we do are usual morning (30-90min) then I head off to work for about 5-6 hours (counting driving). Get back, hang with him till I have to go ride for about (10-30min), get back hang with him again before bed (1-3hours).
2 hr low – 5.5 hrs high end Wednesday – this is basically the same as Monday so I’m not going to bore you with it twice.
2 hr low – 5hrs high end Thursday – again same as Tuesday for the most part
2 hr low – 5hrs high end Friday – same as Tuesday and Thursday
3 hr low – 6 hrs high end Saturday – I usually sleep in a little later than usual. But Romeo still gets up with me to get ready, and then I go out to the barn as usual sometimes I go out and see people or do extra stuff on Saturday but not always. When I get back, as always, I get out my Romeo. Probably spend 3-6 hours with him.
I know this is a little repetitive but I really would like to know if I am a good candidate for a blue and gold macaw. I know I would treat him right, I know how to handle them and all that I just want to know if my time frame for one is good enough to satisfy their need for so much attention. I have been wanting to open my home to one for years and now that my husband and I are wanting to get serious about it I thought I would see if our home is a good place for one. I don’t want to get one and realize after it pulls out all its feathers that maybe we were being unrealistic about having the time for one.
I just want to do right by the bird.
