Willie never been DNA sexed and we kept his name from previous owner when he was 2 years old and we've had him for 8 years. He bit me real good last night drawing blood and big piece of skin ripped from my hand. I was caught off guard as he never attacked me like that before, even my partner was shocked. The only one Willie is being nice to right now is Rocco my white husky. Alexis and him grew up together, he even attacks her right now. He is trying to nest on the bottom of the cage right now. We may have to change the name to Wilma, we'll see if there's an egg being laid....Willie is loving Rocco right now....lol.....I just have to keep my hands out of the cage and he will not get to come out to play until the hormonal stage is over. He only let me scratch his head right now for just little bit, then he wants me to back off, only Rocco is allowed....they give kisses back and fourth....

Don't you just love this time of the year. It is never a dull moment when you have a house full of birds going through this at the same time. I feel for you and wish you a speedy recovery on your hand.

I was shocked when he bit me....he was out just an hour earlier and crawling around on the floor and I picked him up and cleaned his cage. Then he went to the bottom and grabs the paper through the grates and started shredding. That's when his mood changed and when I place my hand with in, he just clamp down before I can respond. Only thing JoJo is trying to do right now is hump my back, my girls are not too bad right now.

Oh my, you're in trouble. Macaws mature later??? I'm a little intimated by a macaw bite, their beaks are so big. Hope you heal up & Willie (Wilmina) straightens up & flys right. lol

It can take some to sexually mature at 10 years old. He turned 10 a few months back....

I know a great place that does DNA sexing if you are interested. It cost me 24 dollars and all I had to do was send them a few feathers. :)

I have a package at home that I can either do blood or feather sample to send in. It never both is not to DNA sex cause over time it shows....the only one we're unsure about the sex is Willie...

how long do they stay hormonal for??

an lol erm poor willie and your hand

i know how i am when i am hormonal lol so if willie is wilma, then watch out for the fryin pan!!

Your poor hand! Puck got me pretty good yesterday when he was possessed by a demon.

Do you think Willie things Rocco is his/her mate??

Get him a stuffed female Macaw. Oh my just kidding. Poor bird has to go through what nature dictates. The time changes get them off schedule also. Take care of that hand I know it must hurt.

Yes, I think that's why I was being attacked....I managed to lure Willie out using Rocco, then he was better but still tries to attack. I placed him on his playstand in a neutral area, much better. He/She thinks the cage is the nesting area....being protective....

LOL@suebee & Spiritbird...thanks! You guys made me laugh, I needed it...

Suebee, up to 6 weeks.....ugh!!!

If I were good at drawing, I would draw you a bird/dog hybrid. That's a funny image!

When I had nesting cockatiels they were bitey when they were in the cage, but when we got them away from it they reverted back to their sweet, usual selves.

LoL@Remy!!!!!

I just read this...lol..The thing is the second time he bit me I had him far away from his cage and it still did not help....Update on Willie, FINALLY he's back to his old self tonight!!!!!! I started noticing a difference in him Saturday night. He stopped nesting or shredding paper on the bottom of his cage. We started playing tickle toes through the cage bars and he played along. So I venture to take him out tonight, he came right out without any issue. His hormones lasted MORE then just 6 week period. It lasted for about 3 months.

Plus, I have not yet moved him into the bird room as theres a piece of furniture I'm donating to goodwill is still here....shouldn't had that piece of furniture we had it made for $1500 and never use it, too expensive to trash it, so donating to good cause was the way to go. So even with the dog around, he's being nice to me once again.... :)

Glad to hear he's back to himself/herself : ) That must have been a long three months.

YES! A long 3 months of him being hateful towards anyone but the dog...lol

My boyfriend Jake does the same thing! He started last year, and I got bitten pretty good just about every time I went in the cage. I finally figured it out. Now when he's in that mood, he comes out on a stick, not the hand. Thank goodness all he can do is lacerate me.

Yes, according to Jake, he's my boyfriend. My husband is merely tolerated.
