I am new to the forum. I don't actually have a bird yet. I am still looking for a cage. I would like to adopt a Conure. I want to make the best home for the bird before it arrives so I am taking some time to learn about what I will need to do in the way of preparation.

There are a number of things that concern me about the bird's safety. My home is very lived in so a lot of things tend to be left out and I have ceiling fans in most of the house.

I don't think it is practical or healthy to keep a bird confined to its cage 24/7. And I am afraid that an accident could happen.

Welcome! What species of Conure are you looking at?

The ceiling fans shouldn't pose a serious problem as long as they are not running while your future parrot is out and about. It's better if you learn how to recall so incase they get up there and are too stubborn to get down, you can call their name and they'll fly to you.

You are absolutely right about keeping a parrot in their cage for 24/7. As a rule of thumb, the smaller species of parrots should have about an hour of out of cage time per day and the time should increase based on the size of the bird. But it's best to have them out as long as you possibly can for every species. All of them should have an equal time outside. As long as you stay committed, prepared, and interested in parrots you shouldn't have to worry about that.
