Chico, The Green Cheek Conure
I just got my Green Cheek Conure 4 days ago (he is 3 months old) I got him from a breeder and he seems healthy and all but he doesn't really like the food I give him. I'm worried he's not really eating. So I contacted the breeder and they said they fed him Cockatiel Vitamin food from Wal-Mart. It's all seeds and I heard Conures aren't really supposed to eat a lot of seed. I have pellet food for him but he never really eats it. He only eats the Millet I give him. So can I give him this Cockatiel food? He was raised eating it and I don't want something to happen to him. Help!:green1::orange: thanks!

Yes offer it to him. Important thing is that he keeps eating right now. Later on, do a very gradual transition to healthier food (pellets). Mix the two foods little by little, every week.

Don't forget to introduce him to fresh fruits and veggies. Look up the toxic food list for parrots so you don't accidentally give him something harmful. Good luck.

I second that! He is a baby and has been weaned on that food, albeit not healthy, he needs to eat. They tend to like apples early on, and scrambled eggs. Keep feeding millet too, it's good for him while he's growing. Offer pellets soaked (soak them in a little hot water, but replace them often, so only soak a few at a time), it's easier on little beaks. You can cook and mash veggies for him, if he's newly weaned, he should accept warm mushy food easily.

I started my GCC with pallets by adding water to soften them. Also try stewing some apples and mashing them, you can then mix them into the pallets to make them taste like apples.

Now he will eat the small pallets everyday without needing to wet etc but if I give him the bigger size pallets he won't touch em! So I guess try another size pallet too as that could be his issue.

Hearing this makes me even more thankful that I have found a breeder before my baby has hatched! My breeder is willing to wean the birds onto the pellet brand that I want to use even though he normally uses a seed mix. I am very lucky!

Also, try handfeeding him the pellets! Lukah (although he was 4 months when I got him) was on an all-seed diet. I gave him the pellets by hand (he's naturally very curious) and once he figured out they were food and what they tasted like he LOVED them. So maybe a combination of what everyone said plus handfeeding?:)

Eeeww...... Wally World food.......... gross!

Seeing and feeling birds fed that food... just gross! Yucky feathers.

"OK" to feed for now, but definitely do not keep him on it!
