Hyacinth Macaw
Hello everyone,

My Wife and I brought home last Saturday a Hyacinth Macaw. Her name is Roxy. She is a total handful as we expected. She has shown us a lot of love already after only 5 days of her being apart of the family. She already sits on my lap and allows me to scratch her head as well as my youngest daughters who is 13. She loves peanut butter captain crunch as well as scalloped potatoes.

The people we got her from didn't take very good care of her. She was given to them after their Grandmother died and just didn't have time for her. I think this is why she began plucking. I think we got her before it got to bad and were hoping she will grow back her feathers. I also think they butchered her wings in a feeble attempt to trim her so she cant fly. Her beak seems ok but her nails are pretty long so we have an appointment with the Avian vet tomorrow.

I was hoping to post a few question to see if what we are doing is correct.

1. We would like to put her cage in our FINISHED basement next to the only window that does get sun light. Her cage is pretty large and 48" X 30" X 54" and we feel its a HUGE eyesore in the living room. She would only be there for Bed time or while we were running errands. We bought a perch for the upstairs with wheels so she will be with us most of the time. Does this seem ok?

2. Bathing (Shower). How many times a month should we do this? I was told she likes it but after the second day I tried to get her in there while on my arm and she didn't seem to pleased. She didnt bite or anything just moved away from the stream. I'm going to chalk that one up as not being to comfortable with us yet.

3. Regurgitating on me when its our hang out time. Is this normal and should I worry?

4. Should I put something in her cage like a cement block so she can work her beak?

I would like to thank anyone who answers in advance.

Chris and Sherry

Hello Chris, Sherry, and Roxy. Welcome to the forum!

Thanks so much for taking in Roxy :). She was obviously in dire need of a loving, dependable home and I'm so glad you have decided to provide one for her! In 2005, my Hy, Zaffer, was in a similar situation in that his owner had passed away and he had been homeless for approximately one year. I was thankfully able to get him out of the predicament. He's been my best friend ever since.

I would not give Roxy Cap'n Crunch cereal... it's very high in sugar which is not good for her. The scalloped potatoes may not be the best idea either. It really depends upon what's in the sauce, and potatoes are quite high in starch (which converts to sugar). You should get her some high quality parrot pellets and as well offer her vegetables, fruits, plenty of nuts (macadamias, almonds, pecans, brazils, cashews, walnuts, and hazelnuts - all unsalted!). Small amounts of safe food items that you're having for meals may be okay to offer Roxy at times. Don't feed her meat or other high protein foods unless your avian vet recommends doing so. Hyacinth Macaws are extra prone to protein intoxication. You will definitely want to have a discussion with your avian vet about Roxy's dietary requirements and safe foods!

If it's only for her sleep time and she appears calm when in her cage at the basement location, and if you can confirm that she's sleeping well, it should be acceptable. But please be mindful that Roxy should be allowed as much time as possible around and interacting with family members each and every day! She needs bonding time with you, especially right now. And she really needs to come to feel that she's a member of your family and that she can depend upon that belief as a consistent fact. She's been through a lot and experienced a great deal of stress in her life.

2. Bathing (Shower). How many times a month should we do this? I was told she likes it but after the second day I tried to get her in there while on my arm and she didn't seem to pleased. Twice per week is ideal. Once per week is acceptable. Since Roxy hasn't quite accepted the real shower scenario yet you can simply use a misting spray bottle set on its finest mist level and spray her while she's on her perch stand. Again, try to do this twice per week or so.

3. Regurgitating on me when its our hang out time. Is this normal and should I worry?
If she's doing the pumping type of regurgitation it means she is feeling affectionate toward you, which is a good sign in your current situation. When she begins to regurg for you, you may want to pet her, speak softly to her, then place her on her perch until her moments of passion pass.

4. Should I put something in her cage like a cement block so she can work her beak?
Yes. You should get Roxy one of those pedicure perches and mount it in her cage. That will help control her nails and beak. Your avian vet will undoubtedly trim her nails (and her beak if necessary) and the rough perch will help her maintain them.

Welcome Chris & Sherry! :) So nice of you to join....and many many congrats on your addition.

Can't wait to see some pics. I LOVE Hys, just magnificent animals!:D

Thank you so much for he warm welcome. I will ask the avian tomorrow about diet for sure. Im going to try and upload a few pictures and see what you guys think. Im hoping her feathers will grow back.

You should be able to hit the "attachments" paperclip icon in the top row of buttons on your 'Reply to Thread' form which will make a browse button appear that you can press to select and upload images from your computer.

The other way is to post your images on a site (like photobucket.com or other image hosting site) and use the "Insert Image" button in the bottom row to enter the URLs of your images.

Hope that helps some.

Ok I've uploaded the photos but I'm having a hard time posting them to a reply. Anyway off to the vet. Have a great day and thanks for the help Plex.

When you are creating your post, go into attachments, click on upload from Computer, then browse.. click on the pic you want to show, then click on upload.... or if you have photobucket just hover mouse over the image then left click on IMG and it will say copied, then just paste into your message box, go onto preview post and it will show if it has gone in properly:)

In reference to the perch on wheels, I'm pretty sure that it won't keep her busy enough. While you want out of cage and bonding time, she still need to climb, chew, swing etc....
Make sure she has plenty of exercise and things to do, or she might use her mighty beak on your furniture! LOL

Congrats! Can wait for pictures!!

Congratulations. Hyacinth Macaws are such beauty's. you are very lucky to have her. I hope you get all the help you need from the forum. I look forward to seeing your pictures..

Well im going to try this again. I have Roxy on my lap and shes just hanging out. Went to the vet and all he had to do was trim the nails and said she was a tad under weight. All she has to do is eat her fruits and vegitables. So here we go ill try and load these pictures.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I don't know if the vet told you or not but she's not a Hyacinth macaw but a blue and gold. They are awesome as well.

don't be too hard on yourself, at least you're being honest about it all! Macaws are great companions regardless!! (although I'm a little biased) :54:
I love all our birds but my Green Wing ReaRea is my baby ;)

Hehe, she's beautiful. Not a Hy, but certainly a blue and gold. Little bit different to keep, but not much different. Quite a few members here with blue and golds who can chime in a bit now. What did the vet say about her? :)
