Maggots.

Some of you might have remembered my thread about 'things that freak you out'... Well, I'd have to say that larvae are among the top few things in this world that I REALLY have a hard time seeing.

Today I was dumping the trash, and I came to the large trash can which we keep in the garage which had a liner bag in it. Food trash goes into this can, so it's really no surprise, though I've never noticed it happening before. I lifted the bag out of the trash can like usual, and I looked inside the empty large plastic can (for whatever reason)... There sat 16 fly maggots.

I was the only one home. I took a deep breath, figuratively rolled up my sleeves, and said 'I'm going in'. LOL. I had no choice! Had to kill them since I hate when flies get into the house. Now the fear isn't as bad as it used to be when I was younger. It's not a complete phobia anymore, but nonetheless, it's still bad enough that I couldn't just reach in with some paper and squish them which I could have easily done since there were only 16 of them (all the others were contained inside the trash bag. These several guys obviously crawled out of the bag and into the can).

I sprayed them with some pet safe bug spray. I think it's mainly made of tree oils and wintergreen. It says for crawling insects, and says on the can "works fast!" (Yeah right) These were crawling alright! So was my skin by now ... This stuff didn't work. It only made them crawl top speed. Now I had the 16 maggots literally "running" all over the place, with the smell of wintergreen choking me out!! :26:

Next I tried water... Ha! I'll drown them I thought. Nope. They apparently hold their breath for a LONG time or breathe underwater . I gave up waiting...

I said that's it!! I'm pouring in bleach! What could possibly survive bleach? Especially with soft bodies and thin skin. Mixed with water, but it really wasn't too much water, and quite a bit of bleach. NOPE! They lived after 10 minutes in bleach water... I added more bleach, and waited again. FINALLY MOST of them started to disintegrate. One was STILL moving, which was absolutely beyond belief! I then poured it all out into the curb, dried the can... Then has visions of wriggling maggots in my minds eye for a good part of the day :(

Edit: almost forgot... The trash can was new and still had a brand label on it with some light adhesive (so it peeled off easily). When I was replacing the bag liner, it got stuck to this sticker label, so I just pulled it off. To my absolute HORROR, attached to the sticker were 2 maggots... Also attached to the sticker was my finger!!!:eek: I don't know if any of the neighbors saw me do a strange little dance or not but I was very relieved to get the sticker with the maggots off my finger! It was only stuck to me for a few seconds, but it felt much longer.

My lunch today included rice..... :52:

I read this right before watching criminal minds one of the episodes had TONS of maggots just piles and piles and piles. It made me think of you lol.

You didn't have any worries RG, maggots only eat decaying matter...but...they are 100% protein & I've heard they fry up nice & crispy.....I think lime juice can be used to kill them...if nothing else, it should pickle them & might even make them tasty for your feathered friends.....just a few thoughts off the top of my head ! ! !

:)))

So I guess you won't be eating white rice for a while? :)

I will never forget the day my 3 or 4 year old brother came running into the house amazed and excited, "mom mom mom! Look what I found!" And then with all the showmanship of someone who just made a major scientific discovery or invented a time machine, he shoved his little hand out, opened it, and declared, "MOVING RICE!" Yep, and then we learned where flies come from.... ;)

LOL Raven. That story made me laugh so hard!! I'm Still laughing. Thanks for sharing!! Yeah maggots are pretty nasty. I pour gasoline on em. If there is a lot ill light it ^^ Can't stand them, can't stand flies more.

I can't believe they survived bleach for ANY period of time. I feel like I'm dying as soon as I open the jar of bleach:p What nasty, vile little things. My reaction (most likely) would have been to place the trashcan outside with the lid firmly shut and let Joe deal with it when he got home:)

Weco is right though, you COULD have 'basted' them in lime and fried them up for your flock lolololol:D Parrots do eat bugs in nature you know, and being you have all male birds you thoroughly spoil, they should have been more than willing to come to your aid in your time of distress (specially since a "treat" was involved):54:

Actually I had East Indian food for lunch.... It was yellow rice, so I didn't make the connection until I was almost done :26:

You know weco... Somehow I KNEW you'd come up with a solution! ps... They're so tiny I think they'd just go 'poof' and disappear when trying to fry them... You try it next time you get the opportunity and let us know. Don't forget the lime juice...

OMG Moving rice!! :D That's both hilarious and disgusting!

I couldn't believe it either! You know how harsh bleach (even mixed with water) is on your hands, how it disintegrates your skin?! Unreal how hard they were to kill.

These things are absolutely made to survive! I guess they have to be somewhat hardy in the environment as they have a job to do besides gross us humans out. They need to clean up carcasses afterall :20:

Oh, and the trash can didn't have a lid. I'll have to go back and get one now. It's easier to just have the can open so we can open the door (leading into the garage) and just throw the trash over our dog barrier fence. The fence is too tall for me to reach over it to lift a lid .... Or, we can go the long way into the garage, but why do that when you can do it the lazy way lol.

When Joe is not home and I encounter a perfectly nasty bug, I will trap it in a jar or under a cup for him to 'dispose' of when he gets home:54: He always gives me this look----> :31:

Haha! I think I'd get this look ---> :20: since he knows I'm not afraid of bugs. Maggots yes! BUT I felt I had no choice other than to deal with it, since I didn't want them getting away and turning into flies!! I hate when flies get into the house, it's so gross but nearly impossible to keep it from happening now that it has gotten really hot.

Holy crap Julie, I think you and your thread on creepy bugs jinxed me:16:. I just went to do my dishes and there was a GIANT *bleeping* spider in the dishpan :22_yikes: :22_yikes: :22_yikes:

I'm glad my landlords weren't home or they may have thought I was being MURDERED. I probably scared a poop right out of poor Kiwi too. He's was making his little "alert" noise he does when he's scared:( No more creepy bug talk for me! Now my skin is crawling and I am still sobbing:smile040:

Oh no!!! Now I feel bad :17: lol. Just be glad it wasn't a giant Madagascan Hissing Cockroach

I may require institutionalization if I found one of those in my dishpan:30: O god, I was just recovering, and now I'm scared to go in the kitchen for fear of giant hissing cockroaches:eek:

O, and in case anyone was curious, boiling water kills giant spiders instantly:54:

Don't make me feel guilty! :02: haha. I didn't think of scalding hot water yesterday, but that I'm sure would have worked.

I am KIDDING (just to be clear). Unless you flew all the way to Oregon, snuck in whilst I wasn't looking and placed that great big spider in there:20: Then we may have some problems:54:

I'm KIDDING too! I know you knew that though. ;) Don't you hate how the internet lacks inflection in the voice? Lol. Sometimes I have to re-type something just to make it more clear.

Okay, no more bugs... Just use your Orange Guard ;). I tried to use it on a fly today, but it was too fast.

Yuck! I can handle almost any bug of practically any size. But maggots, EWW! I have a phobia of them, too.

Anything like that grosses me out. Slimy, crawling/wiggling...yuck! Just gives me the hee-bee-jee-bees and goosebumps. :(

For your viewing pleasure, here he is before he got boiled:

His legspan was probably bigger than a quarter. Hope you like!;)

Looks like you 'had' a nice male grass spider specimen there ;) Spiders of Oregon

I read on another site - only 3 spiders in the US are poisonous to humans. Brown recluse, black widow, brown widow.
