Ah, avoiding the beak! I saw someone pick up a macaw by the "rear end" - behind the legs but the fingers wrapped around the lower end of the body (just above the tail) and hands to support the body. Done in such a way, the bird can't bite, and this being one bird that only one person could handle, but she (bird) lived with two humans and the other human needed a way to pick her up! She was blind so couldn't see anything placed in front of her, and if she thought you were someone else, she'd bite!
 
Funny the things you notice...today I had a patient that kept trying to scratch and bite me...had to avoid her beak too!
