Hahn's macaw, RIP George, Jenday Conure
After drinking water he decided it was time to go berzerk and start biting me while I tried to get him off my shoulder.

I grabbed him like I usually do around the neck and put him on his back. But this time i think the water came back up thru his poor little nose and now its making a whistling noise when he breaths in.

How long is normal for the nose to clear before I hafta make a vet visit out of it?

He is calm, sitting on my shoulder, not tail-bobbing or gasping for air. He is sneezing infrequently at present. (A lot when it started) but now its becoming more rare.

I'm not versed in avian nasal anatomy, but I might equate it with us getting water in our sinus cavities and having a funny voice for a while, maybe a drop or two of water is caught & will work its way out.....if it concerns you, give your vet a call when they open.....

I plan to keep an eye on him tomorrow and if need be I have wednesday morning off to take him in. I will check him in the morning and during the night if my own sinus infection keeps me awake again. He is loving all the attention though.

How is Hahnzel this morning??? I really hope he managed to clear the water out of his sinuses.

He is really tired it seems. I am having my son take him to the vet today. He had to be coaxed into coming out of his cage. I spoke with a 24 hr vet last night and she said aspiration pneumonia is always a concern.

I hope Hahnzel will be ok. Keep us posted.

Update, he is staying overnight at the birdy hospital. He had lost about 2.5 grams since our grooming last week likely due to no food or water last night or this morning. They are syringe feeding him since he wont eat independently. He is drinking water though and trying to attack the vet whenever she goes by his pen. He is quite feisty towards the staff and they interpret this as a good sign. Will know more tomorrow morning and will let you all know, thanks for your support.

Oh wow! I'm so glad he's at the vet! Feisty Hahnzel is letting them know who's boss. :)

How unusual, a little water up the nose and it turns into a full blown vet stay. I'm so glad you took him in when you did and nice to hear he's being fiesty!

Hope he just needs some time with the vet and he'll be right as rain soon :) x

Vet called this morning and said he is hydrated, but still doesn't want to eat. I gave a short list of favorite foods and am going down there in a couple of hours to see if its just him being away from me thats causing the problem or if its something else.

Oh, and it was more than a little water. When I inverted him he started gagging heavily like he was trying to throw up, but nothing ever came up. It took more than a few minutes to get to the point where he was sneezing only infrequently.

If you've ever blown soda or water out your nose or forgot to swallow and inhaled a little saliva, you might think to yourself, "that wasn't all that much fluid, but it caused such a big problem.: Multiply (or divide) that by the size of a drop and the size of the average birds nasal passages and airways compared to a human's and you might begin to see why he's responding like he is. More likely than not he is experiencing two problems. First, if the inhaled water has him off to a point he won't eat or drink, it doesn't take much to shut down his eating and drinking. It also doesn't take much time to lose enough weight and body fluids to throw off the whole sustem. Second, if water remains in his airways and nasal passages, it will most likely get sneezed up or absorbed into the bird. The amount doesn't have to be much and it takes time to absorb from the airways into the bird.

Time, patience, a watchfull eye and some careful force feeding/watering should be all it takes to get his system back on track.

Best Wishes,

Forbey

Okay, the little guy is home and overjoyed. Turns out his lack of eating was his rebellion against the vet and staff. I went down and sat with him for about an hour before i had to be to work. The first thing he does is sit on my shoulder, fluff up his feathers and very sweetly say, "Hi" into my ear. So after I melted into the floor he began eating all the treats I brought to try and get him to eat. I had my son come down and pick him up after I went to work and he rode on his head or the headrest the whole way home.

Glad to hear he's home! Sorry I must have missed the part where he was 'dunked' in water and it was actually more than a drizzle up his nose!

Usually cuddles from parronts make the world better for them, glad he's eating and home. Bet he's feeling miles better just for being there. Did the vet say anything else about him? Keeping an eye out or has he been given the all clear? :)

What great news!!!! You must be elated to have him back home safe and sound...and probably making up for the food he hasn't eaten. :)

Antibiotic shots for 7 days just in case he aspirated. Anti inflammitories as needed and monitor to ensure the ins and outs of his birdy plumbing are working properly. Bath today, bit me for daring to come near his nutriberry...yuuup, thats my boy.;)

I think he had a crop full of water and it emptied when I flipped him upside down. Thats where the deluge came from.

I've got to tell you, I take my hat off to you for your speedy reaction to Hahnzel's dilemma!!!

...and don't touch his Nutriberries...OUCHY!!! :D

I'm glad he's doing better, but is it just me and not liking the part about him being grabbed around his neck and put on his back as a form of punishment?

The grabbing is a simple move which only immobilizes the beak and never threatens his airway. The malfunction we had was only due to his crop full of water. Its not a cruel or malicious action.
