Hahn's or Severe?

I recently bought the below, the shop owner said that it's a Severe Macaw , but I'm not sure, as it's beak is too light.

Can anyone tell the difference at this age? (6 weeks)

There's a huge size difference between severe and hahns. That's not a severe.

That doesn't look like a Severe to me either, but I can see the Hahn's. Hahn's macaws generally have less of a "napoleon complex" then Severe's do, though I think most mini macaws are inclined toward that sort of thing. In any case, I don't think this little guy looks like a Severe at all.

That's what I thought. Even from the fact that baby severes have a darker beak at that age.

I took this picture as well today, as I know there is a difference in the amount of red there is under the wing between the species

I agree that is not a Severe, the beak would be much blacker and Severe's have more of a bare patch on their face even at that age. It looks more like a Hahn's but I am really wondering why the shop owner/breeder would not know what type of baby they were selling? Are you experienced in hand feeding?? What type of formula do you have the baby on?

Severe and Hahn's have a quite large size difference- as already mentioned. Hahn's to me seem to be the size of a large conure.(Patagonian, Golden, etc.) Just not as long. Not only that, but depending on where you're from, the PRICE difference is huge also. Where I am you can find a Severe from a breeder for $800~$1,200, depending on where/who/shipping/etc. Hahn's usually go for $500~$700.. a considerable amount less.

Id say you have a Hahn's on your hands, and I agree with Labell, it's concerning that the shop keeper doesn't even know the breed of the babies being sold, and would sell them unweaned..

Currently I'm feeding it Nutribird A19, got it at 3 weeks of age, and I always had concerns over the species he was. Luckily I have hand reared other parrots/ parakeets before (never a macaw) and my girlfriend has worked with parrot in an animal park.
I got it for 380 euros, keep in mind that I live in Malta.

Hahn's are WAY SMALLER than a patty...

That looks like a Hahn's to me as well. And in my opinion they generally have a much more pleasant disposition... but I am biased. I rehabbed several, and almost lost a thumb to one.

I met one severe I dearly loved. The rest were not very happy... they have a very real tendency to overbond and become one person birds.

Hi. i have a Hahn's Macaw and brought her home at six weeks. This is what she looked like at six weeks old. It was taken at the store. Like other have said, there is a big difference between a Severe and a Hahn's. If it is in fact one or the other my bet would be a Hahn's. He is not feathered as much as Hahnna was at that age and unless it is the picture Hahnna seems to be smaller at six weeks than your baby.. Do you know how many grams your baby weighs? I will look and see what Hahnna weighed. I want to say she was 114 grams at six weeks but I will have to look at her papers to be sure. She is now nine months and weighs 140 grams. I will tell you, as a Hahn's mommy, they are wonderful. I love my little girl so much. Elaine and Hahnna

My Hahns now weighs 138gms and is approaching 3y/o in July.

I weighed the macaw yesterday, and the balance said 158g, he's now on his 8th week.

I have no idea what a baby Severe would look like but I do know for sure that 158 grams at 8 weeks is not a Hahns. Hahnna is almost a year old and hits about 142 and she is fed a good diet, no seed. They top off at around150 as adults. At six weeks she was I believe 114 grams. My guess would be based on weight that baby would have to be a Severe. Just my humble opinion. i guess we will see who,is right as your baby grows up . Either way, certainly adorable.

It's definitely not a Severe Macaw. The bare skin around the face of a Severe is more extensive, and like a larger macaw, has the feather line patterns. The shade of green is deeper and more emerald in a Severe. Also adult Severes weigh about 350-400 grams. So even at that age would be MUCH bigger with a larger and black beak. I don't think Hahn's and Severe look alike at all, either in photos or in person.
Maybe he has some Noble Mac blood? Very similar to a Hahn's but one difference is it's a bit larger.
