Hahns Macaw first vet visit!!

Is aspergilliosis a common illness in parrots?

Yes...it is something all species are susceptible to.....it caused by the spores of one of the molds that we all breath in everyday and can infect we humans also. Because of their delicate respiratory system, companion birds seem to be those pets in greater danger.....if you are a peanut fan, raw peanuts should not be brought into your house...only food-grade roasted peanuts or peanuts that have been re-roasted should be fed to Sunny.....

Anyone in your house, who may have asthma or a compromised immune system could be seriously affected by aspergillosis.....

There are several zoonotic diseases that can be traded back and forth between birds & humans, so you might want to read up on those.....the next time you speak with your vet, ask the if they think it would be better for Sunny in you used microfilter bags in your vacuum...if they are available for your model.....

Good luck.....

Sunny will actually stick his fang up his nose that I think is clogged up and shake it, Is he picking his nose? My next vet visit is the 26th.

Also another question, we wanted to know should we have a calcium cake in the cage? We have a backbone of a squid but he hasn't touched it,

We are going out today to do toy shopping, he has torn up two of his toys

That's talon, not fang...or nail.....

Although most birds get their calcium from eating, if they're fed a proper diets. Some birds don't mess with the commercial cuttlefish bone cakes...I've not bought one of those in over 15 years...instead I feed mine scrambled eggs with finely crushed shells mixed in, mainly because they all like the scrambled eggs & both the eggs & shells are from another bird so can easily be handled & absorbed by their bodies......of course there are other calcium rich foods good for birds, but some, like spinach should only be fed on those days/occasions when calcium is not being fed, because the oxalates in the spinach and some other foods bind to the calcium & prevents a bird's body from absorbing the calcium.....

Good luck.....

Hello Weco, thanks, we have been studying about asper, I threw away all the shelled peanuts we had in the house, watching all foods we feed the little guy, and also bought a microfilter for our dyson vacuum cleaner, next step is an air filter by Sunny, thanks for the tip on zoonotic diseases and something I will research, no one in our house has any asthma or compromised immune system,

I have a similar problem with my 6 month old macaw, everything has been great up to now and 5 days ago we were lying in bed and he made a weezing sound and than did it a few more times, it concerned us so we took him for a check up the next day and his check up was perfect, the vet didn't recommend further testing because everything looked perfect she said. He didn't do it again until last night and I took a video, sorry for the quality but hopefully someone can give me a clue on what to do? [ame="http://youtu.be/W0nTVptSG6A"]Macaw - YouTube[/ame]

My Hahns macaw only wheezes when he is stressed or been moving around a lot. I will have to get home to watch your video, but are you comfortable. With the vets experience with macaws?

Ok I just watched the video and did not notice anything unusual, my Hahns makes a purring/growling noise when I am petting it and the vet said it was normal, I did not notice a wheeze on this video

OK, this is day ten of the antibiotics, whew he did not miss a day or dose, he appears to be breathing easier and have an appointment with the vet next Monday.

My Hahnna had one when she was a baby. I was toldthat yes the Hahn's are more prone to them. They put Hahnna on Batryl. I am pretty sure that is what she was on. For what it is worth she has not had another since, but ai do keep an air purifyer in her room. When we had Cricket, our 21 year old Cockatiel rescue, Hahnna started to wheeze a little, she was allergic to the Teil's powder but once I put the purifer in and gave Crick a bath daily Hahnna was fine. Good luck and I hope your baby gets better.

Yeah, I'm going to be getting an air purifier next week, Sunny did well with the antibiotic , and it was baytril, still has a little sniffle, but the air is dry here in the mountains of NC, also keeping the cage cleaner and no commercial seeds, vet visit is next week, we will see what's up.
