hi, im new to this site, i just made a profile today so im sorry if im setting up this convo wrong but i just need help badly!
I have a 2 month old male yellow sided green cheek conure who is pretty quiet, until i leave the room, he starts screaming out for me. if he cant see where i am he just starts going off. He also hates his cage. Is there such a thing as “too much attention”? lol because he is out of his cage and with me 90% of the time, i’m constantly giving him attention, we play games all the time, if not then he is always sitting on my chest or on my boyfriend.
I have tried to put treats in his cage when i need him to be on his own for a while (like if i need to clean up or go run a quick errand) so that way he doesn’t look at it as a “punishment” ive gotten new toys for him, swapped them and rotated them around so he doesnt get bored. but nothing seems to be working, i think he may be too attatched, our bonding time is ALL the time. When i first got him it only took me one hour to gain his trust and come out.
i love him and i will never re home him, i just want him to enjoy his time in his cage as well as out of it. i leave the door open so he can go in and out freely but he only goes in there to eat or drink, once he is done he wants to come out and i never hear the end of it if i dont let him. I wouldnt mind him being out and about but i have to keep an eye on him or he could hurt himself or get into all sorts of trouble. He just wants everything i have too no matter if its food or an object he really loves being involved which makes it difficult to do tasks around the house. Nothing at home has changed, i havent moved furniture around, his cage is near my computer. I just don’t really know what to do anymore, i feel ive tried everything.
I know these birds require alot of attention, but i really just need like 10 or 15 minutes to myself for once lol. im about to have a baby in 2 months so ill need him to get used to it, i purchased this bird because i feel really lonely sometimes and i needed the company and friendship but my god he is just so attatched to me. ill be living in an apartment too so i dont want to upset other people. im sure everything will be ok but i just want to try and get him into the habbit of enjoying some in cage time. It is a rather large cage: 46x36x56. i plan on getting a way larger cage with some foraging toys, that might help? he seems to like his toys but would rather be with me. if that doesnt help maybe getting another bird will help him spend time in his cage i dont know?
or will he grow out of these habbits cause he is just a baby right now? any advice would be great thanks!
