Hi

I have a question about green cheek conures.

My pair of green cheeks are, Male: Yellow Sided. Female: Pineapple. They recently produced two young birds. She laid 6 eggs but only 2 survived. I think 2 were infertile and the others were not strong enough to survive. There was blood in the nest when one baby died, I am guessing that the mum could not cope with raising more than the initial 2 birds. The two young birds look very similar to their father. ie Yellow Sided. One of the young now has some small red feathers (tiny) above the beak and eyes.

I have a couple of questions please.

1. Are they likely to lay more eggs this season?

2. Is the bird with the tiny red feathers likely to be an unusual variety.

Thanks for the Forum

1. yes- they may if they are kept together.
2. you need to separate the babies once weaned because the siblings and parents can and will mate as well and an inbred bird can have lots of problems.. (that was my 2nd point but it didn't answer your second question-sorry!)

Hello Welcome. Cute family! I'd pull out the best box and give Mom a break until next year.
