About a week ago my boyfriend rolled onto our Green Cheek Conure, Louie, in his sleep (we think). Jordan immediately woke up and spooked Louie causing him to fly into a door nearby. The resulting injuries of these two traumas were as follows: blood from nose and mouth, red and injured right eye (he's still unable to open most of the way), bruising on both eyes, head feathers torn out, and very limited beak mobility. He stayed 24 hours at the vet where they incubated him at 95 degrees, gave oxygen, antibiotics, pain meds and tube feedings. Eventually they sent him home and he's been looking better everyday except that he can only eat baby food out of a syringe despite the fact that he desperately tries to eat his bird seed. It looks like his bottom beak might be forward more than it should be and he can only open it a very small amount. Is there a way to fix this (the vet never said anything about it even when we brought it up)? Will he be permenatly damaged? Is a baby food diet detrimental to his health? Thank you in advance 🙏🏼

I would
a) Call the vet and ask him if the lower beak has been dislocated, and that your Louie can't move it. Maybe Louie has damaged since the vet saw him?

b) Baby food or baby parrot food ( ie Kaytee handfeeding formula ) would be better, mixed a bit thinner then usual
Chemical composition in % for grade 30KHGSА ( 30ХГСА ) C Si Mn Ni S P Cr Cu 0.28 - 0.34 0.9 - 1.2 0.8 - 1.1 max 0.3 max 0.025 max 0.025 0.8 - 1.1 max 0.3
c) since conures love to snuggle, put Louie away in his cage when anyone is sleeping.

Hope the little guy will be OK, sounds like he was quite damaged.

I'm really sorry to hear about poor Louie, what a terrifying thing to happen. It's never a good idea to sleep with a bird, I know it's nice to snuggle but accidents like Louie's happen far too often.

I agree with wrench13, it sounds like your bird needs follow up care. Is your vet an Avian specialist? I'm surprised he or she wasn't able to answer your question about Louie's beak when you brought it up. I would make a new appointment possibly with a different vet for a thorough exam of Louie's beak, it's probably causing him severe pain and it will obviously effect his diet and health.

I hope he fully recovers from his accident, please keep us updated.

Thank goodness you got veterinary help so soon.
Wonderful advice above.
Good wishes to the three of you.
