hey every body, i haven't been on in a while, but i have some possible excellent news! it's a big story, so my sister's boyfriend has been talking to this woman that comes in to his work for the past month or so. she has had a few macaws, and he knew that i was wanting to adopt a gw so told her all about me. well just this past saturday she came in and directly asked him about me and if i was still looking for a bird. long story short she has a gw that she has to rehome because of a upper respiratory issue. shes had him ever since he was a baby, all of his paper work from the breeder, and vet paper work. his name is shamus, and is 20 years young, and also microchiped. i am the only person she has in mind right now, for being his second mom, and it sounds like she really wants me to have him. we have not even met yet, and she has made her decision based upon word of mouth. i am supposed to be going to meet with shamus and his mom sometime this weekend or monday or tuesday. i sure hope he likes me. from what i am told he's extremely friendly, so i'm keeping my fingers crossed. i feel like my prayers have been answered. she wants to be able to see him still, and because we live in the same town, i don't see why she couldn't. after having a fid for 20 years and having to let him go i would be more than happy to let him come visit. this could be a start to a beautiful friendship.:)

Good luck to you :)

Oh how exciting!! I am happy for you! :D Isn't it so wonderful how when something is meant to be & it is the right time for it, it just happens. :red1:

I love GWs, I am still waiting for my girl to wean. She is 6 1/2 months old now so it may still be a while longer. :)

Quick question,

She has the upper respiratory issue or the bird does?

I ask this because I have a 20 year old Macaw that has an infection going on of some kind. I'll hopefully know today what the results of the blood panel and culture are.

If its the person that had the respiratory issue, then awesome (not for the person, but that you get the bird!) I love GWs.

thanks once again, i really hope we connect too. turquoise i was just thinking about you and was wondering if you got ruby jewel yet. but if she's still weaning then can't rush that. i'm counting down the days with you. safira to answer your question, the woman has the the upper respiratory illness. i hope your mac is ok and nothing serious is wrong with him/her. im so excited about shamus, i think i might have my head in the clouds right now, but i was thinking of how coincidental every thing is so far. from what i am told his owner has red hair, and my fiance's family including him are all red heads and are of scottish decent. and shamus is a irish name, my name, heather is scottish also. and because i have been dreaming of one day owning a gw a woman out of nowhere chooses to talk to my brother in law about the birds to find out that SHE has a gw that she has to rehome. it sounds like it could be fate! :D i really really hope we have a connection and he likes me. i think when i get to meet him my nerves are going to be equivalent to going on a first date. oh my goodness!

I'm so glad it's the woman and not the bird. I mean not to wish ill will on another person, but medicating a bird is a pain in the ass (Ha.) My GW does NOT want to be hand fed anything, including antibotics. and the vet bill just to see if we could find out what was wrong, omg. Anyways. Good luck with your GW!!! I <3 them. :)

I just got my GW 3 weeks ago, and he loves to cuddle with me and be scratched despite the fact that I shove stuff down his throat. I hope yours is just as sweet!

i hope things go well too. i am pretty sure i will be letting every body know how our meet and greet went. i think one of my friends at work tried to turn me away from getting one. but i know she secretly doesn't like them, she would much rather have a m2. she thinks she knows all about the birds because a friend of her's has a military mac and she's not to fond of it, and while she is trying to sway me away from my decision i sit and tune her out. i haven't done all this research for nothing. i am well aware that they mate for life, are loud, like to chew etc etc. imo m2's aren't much better, if not worse due to the fact they have a bad rep for being neurotic which i tried telling her that but what do i know. i'm not knocking m2's but just going on what every body else has told me on here and from what i have read on other sites. i think they are absolutely beautiful birds but don't they mate for life also and are very loud and chew alot? so really what's the big difference besides species and the the velcro factor. i'm not worried about it, im more worried that shamus will accept me as his second person, and will be fine with my fiance.

I will tell you one thing there is nothing like a GW. How could you not love them. And it does take a special person to have a M2. Even the most experienced bird people have a hard time with them.

I am excited for you! I hope it works out. Just make sure you get what you want. Don't settle or you will not be happy and second guess yourself later. Keep us posted!

every body says there's nothing like a gw, and i soooo can't wait to find out what it's like to live with one. personality wise i am quite the nut and from what i have observed gw's are just like me, nutty lol, but sweet at the same time. i am sure there is the occasional bad egg, but i wonder who would be to blame for that. and vinny im not settling for just anything so don't worry. i know the lady really wants me to have shamus, but i hope she understands it's really up to him if he wants to be with me. but as far as being able to handle it or not, im am prepared for the unexpected. it's also a good thing my family considers me as a dr doolittle type. there isn't many animals out there that i can't handle. they admire how i have a understanding for so many species.

It make take a lot of time and patience, effort and training on your part for Shamus's adjustment to be successful but I feel from what you are saying in your posts that you are ready for such a commitment.

There are cockatoo bird people and there are macaw bird people. Although I love cockatoo's and have wanted one for many years I never ended up getting one. I learned I am a macaw person and have always had my freak affinity for macaws. As much as I want a cockatoo I cannot live with one because of the feather dust.

thank you so much noble, i can definately say that i have plenty of time to devote to a fid. i work from 4 am to 11 am and then the rest of the day is theirs when i get home, unless i have some running around to do, and they can't come with. so some cage time they will have to get used to if not already. but it's usually not for long because i don't like to be gone for long any ways. and patience is miles and miles and miles long, i don't think i can ever run out of patience. which i know i am probably going to need most of it. and that doesn't bother me one bit. i work with at a bichon breeder's kennel so training is all about patience. i also take care of horses and goats two of the most stubborn animals i have ever dealt with, and i do pretty well with them. we have developed a respect for each other. i give them what they want and most of the time they do what i want them to do. so right now i'm not really all that scared, but confident that i can be a wonderful parront. :)

Hey Heather, that's really great news :). I hope you and Shamus hit it off and he'll be able to come home with you. Keep us posted!
