Blue Fronted Amazon
my boyfriend got a blue fronted amazon a month ago. the bird does not like him at all and has taken to me as his human friend. i know squat about birds.

what i do know is -baby (i didnt name him) is a 31 year old male. i am now the third family he has been with. he knows a few words and is very vocal. i was told he used to ride around on shoulders at the bar and was fond of showers. the second owner was scared of him and he didnt leave the cage much. his nails were too long as his toes would curl up when he stood on the floor but he has since let me cut them to a much shorter length. he also knows a few tricks because one day when we were working on stepping up he kept making me flip him upside down. he likes his belly rubbed and does not seem upset at being touched any where.

the previous owner had him on a diet of seeds and nuts and potato chips, but ive found fresh fruits and veggies that he will eat and a new food that is veggie based. i still give him seeds and nuts but he has to forage around the levels of his cage to find where i hide them.

thats what i got going on so far. tons of questions so your sure to see me around the forum.

thanks for reading and enjoy your night!

I would introduce pellets as a main staple. I prefer Harrison's High Potency Organic Pellets, which I can only find locally at the bird store (petsmart/petco don't have them).

I would also take him for a checkup with an avian certified vet.

Make sure he has plenty of toys in his cage. He needs something to do when you're not around. :)

Congratulations on your new baby!

Wow your awesome, he is very lucky to have you. Seems like you are doing really well. Just keep reading this forum and ask questions as you go. No potato chips. Pellets, fresh organic fruit and veggies is a great start. Congtats!

Salyn,
It sounds like you have a super parrot there. It's great to hear that you two are bonding and that he trusts you so much that he let you clip his nails and is initiating tricks with you. I hope you find having a companion bird to be as fulfilling and fun as do so many members of this forum. It soundsl like you are a natural with him. I have a 31 year-old parrot (cherry-head conure), and let me tell you age can be meaningless with these wonderful creatures -- he's active and playful just like the perpetual 2 or 3 year old kid. Some things have changed over the many years we've been together, but he's still like a kid that wants to have fun, be around his "flock" of humans, and get love, cuddles and head scratches. Ask all your questions on the forums, there are many people will be more than willing to help.

Also, share your stories, good or bad. And photos too.

I agree with Shelly there, your doing great not knowing squat!!!!

Also back up to the pellet post, if you had read not long ago about the truth with Harrison's pellets which I've had known for awhile until that poster brought up some light to everyone to know. As long as your bird is eating pellets, it is still better then just seed diet alone. It's wonderful you already got him eating fruits and veggies. You can also start cooking some food for him as well so your pretty good to go.

Welcome to the forum salyn and Baby, and THANK YOU for giving this boy a good home. :) 31 is not old for an Amazon, so I hope you get to spend many many happy years with him.

It truly sounds like you've made a best friend already with Baby.
