I got my very first cockatiel today, a lutino. She is very young, and I am only assuming that it is a girl. I call her "Tweetie" which is my way of saying sweetie.

She seems friendly, I have held her, loved on her, talked to her and even had her on my shoulder. She likes to play with the side frame on my glasses, and loves to preen my hair.

She is a bit aggressive when I go to take her out of her cage, or try to pick her up; she tries to bite. Will she grow out of this as she gets to know me better?

What should I know about her? What should or shouldn't I do? Any advice is welcome.

When her little comb on her head stands up does that mean she is upset or happy or what?

How old does she have to be to learn to whistle and talk?

I also got a pair of orange cheeked red billed finches. I am told that they are a breeding pair. Advice on them is welcome as well, although I m sure this is not the place for that as its the cockatiel forum.

PS As I wrote this she has sat very patiently on my shoulder entertaining herself. :yellow1:

Reaching in to the cage to get her could be seen as invading her territory and the reason for her defensiveness. Try offering her a treat with your hand to encourage her to come out peacefully.

If She is a SHE don't pet her on the back. This will encourage mating and egg laying. My son made this mistake with one of our female Tiels and it laid a non-fertile clutch of eggs.

Enjoy your little Lutino there beautiful. :yellow1:
