It would depend on the bird I would imagine.
I birdsit my coworker's lovebird (a little butthole who thinks he's king of everything) on occasion and it took a couple days but eventually they could be out together. Thankfully my GCC is a submissive bird with all people and other birds.
But you have to commit to the budgie - if they never get along, you will have two birds who need separate time with you.
